Replacement Drugs The most widely recognized drug for the treatment of Parkinson's disease is levodopa, a medication that is converted into dopamine when it crosses into the brain. Levodopa reduces the symptoms of this disease because dopamine is the chemical that is necessary for human muscles to function normally. It is called a replacement drug because it replaces dopamine. For most patients with Parkinson's disease, levodopa provides significant improvements in their symptoms. However, the therapeutic benefits of this drug usually last for only a limited period of time. After about 3 to 5 years of treatment, levodopa becomes less effective in reducing symptoms in most patients. At times the patient can move around easily or with slight tremor and rigidity, and at other times the patient has difficulty with movement, as if the medicine is "wearing off." For this reason, doctors try to keep the dose of levodopa as low as possible or may not begin treatment with levodopa until the symptoms can no longer be managed by other means.

    Extractions: A brain disease which, like Alzheimer's is uncomfortably common as we age. It's Parkinson's. And while there are drugs to treat it they are far from ideal. So researchers have been looking at drugs which might prevent the diseases progress and even forms of brain surgery including transplantation and a technique called 'deep brain stimulation'. One of the people who's been involved with all three is Warren Olanow, who's Professor of Neurology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. Professor Olanow: Parkinson's is a disease that is due to degeneration of nerve cells in the centre of the brain called the Substantia Nigra. When these cells degenerate patients lose a chemical called dopamine. And this results in a number of signs and symptoms which include tremor, rigidity or stiffness, bradykinesia or slowness, and difficulty with walking, tendency to fall, postural instabilities etc.

James Parkinson established the condition as a clinical entity and his essay continues to be recognised through the world as the classic description of the condition. Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder affecting learned voluntary movements such as walking, talking, writing and swallowing. There are three main symptoms: tremor. rigidity and bradykinesia (slowness of movement). However not everyone will experience all three symptoms. Parkinson's disease results from the loss of the chemical messenger, dopamine, within the centre of the movement in the mid­brain. The cause is as yet unidentified and there is no known cure. Parkinson's disease is not inherited nor is it contagious. The incidence of Parkinson's disease is approximately 1:1000 in the general population, rising to 1:100 over the age of 65 and 1:50 over the age of 80. A little recognised fact is that 1:7 people diagnosed are aged under 40. There are more than 120,000 people with Parkinson's disease in the United Kingdom today and it is common in all parts of the world. The main treatment for Parkinson's disease is drug therapy. Because no two people with Parkinson's disease are exactly alike, the drug treatment has to be tailored to the individual and the timing of medication is as important as the dosage. With the optimum drug treatment, life expectancy for those with Parkinson's disease is normal. Management plays a very important part in the car of people with Parkinson's disease and professions such as physiotherapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy have an important role to play.
