Maternal infections are often transmitted to the fetus in the uterus at different stages of pregnancy. These infections often result in congenital defects or disease. Some of the major infections are toxoplasmosis, syphilis, and listeriosis. Specific information on these infections follows. Toxoplasmosis Toxoplasmosis is a widespread disease that can have implications for pregnant women and their unborn babies. The condition is caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii When a human becomes infected with Toxoplasma gondii , cysts form in the tissues. These cysts were originally known as "pseudocysts", because the wall is partially composed of remaining parasite. Cysts are formed at an early stage of the infection. The cysts are now thought to be a collection of parasites within a vacuole inside the host cell. The cysts do not appear to have a preferred type of tissue or organ in which to form. They tend to persist longer in brain tissue and in striated muscle than in other tissues of the body. Most infected babies appear normal at birth. However, 80 to 90 percent will develop eye infections with possible vision impairments. Some babies will also experience hearing loss, hydrocephalus, mental retardation, learning disabilities, and/or seizures.

Fertility Women who smoke may have reduced fertility.  One study found that 38% of non-smokers conceived in their first cycle compared with 28% of smokers.  Smokers were 3.4 times more likely than non-smokers to have taken more than one year to conceive.  It was estimated that the fertility of smoking women was 72% that of non-smokers.   A Finnish study found a dose-response relationship between numbers of cigarettes smoked and delay in conception.   A recent British study  found that both active and passive smoking was associated with delayed conception. Cigarette smoking can also affect male fertility: spermatozoa from smokers has been found to be decreased in density and motility compared with that of non-smokers.    A new study found that sperm damaged by smoking may also result in more couples having baby girls than boys.   The researchers suggest that the sperm cells carrying the Y chromosome are more vulnerable to the toxins in cigarette smoke. Male sexual impotence Impotence, or penile erectile dysfuntion, is the repeated inability to have or maintain an erection. One US study of men between the ages of 31 and 49 showed a 50% increase in the risk of impotence among smokers compared with men who had never smoked.
