Most colds infection with one of the common cold viruses cause a stuffy or "bunged up" nose, which clears up within a few days. But if the sinuses become inflamed, other symptoms such as headache and painful swelling of the face may develop. Sinusitis may only last a few days (acute sinusitis), or it may be an ongoing problem that, without treatment, never completely goes away (chronic sinusitis). Acute sinusitis is common in the UK, affecting approximately 3 in 1000 people. Chronic sinusitis is less common and affects about 1 in 1000 people. Babies under one dont get sinusitis because their sinuses are not fully developed, but it can otherwise affect people of any age. The sinuses are hollow air-filled spaces in the skull bones. Theyre connected to the nose and lined with the same membrane, called mucous membrane, which produces a slimy secretion (mucus) to keep the nasal passageways moist and trap dirt particles.

Adults and older children have four groups of sinus cavities located within the bones surrounding the nose. Very young children, however, have small sinus passages rather than fully formed sinuses. To work properly, the sinuses need adequate mucus drainage and a functioning immune system to fight off infections. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the mucous membranes that line the sinus cavities. This inflammation causes the mucous glands in the sinuses to secrete more mucus. A significant amount of inflammation and mucus can lead to obstruction of the sinuses, preventing drainage. The common cold, allergic rhinitis or hay fever, chronic rhinitis, deviated septum, and nasal polyps can cause swelling of the nasal and sinus passages and lead to sinusitis. Also, smoking or the breathing in of second-hand smoke interferes with normal functioning of the sinuses, leading to sinusitis. Diseases such as cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, immune deficiencies and immotile cilia syndrome can also cause sinusitis. A cold that starts to get better and then gets worse may be a sign of acute sinusitis. Pain or pressure in some areas of the face (forehead, cheeks or between the eyes) is often a sign of blocked sinus drainage and can be a sign of acute sinusitis. Pain in your forehead that starts when you lean forward can also be a sign. Other symptoms may include a stuffy nose, fever, thick green or yellow nasal mucus, and an ache in your upper teeth. How is acute sinusitis treated? See the box below for other things you can do to feel better when you have acute sinusitis. Tips on taking care of sinusitis Get plenty of rest. Lying down can make your sinuses feel more stopped-up, so try lying on the side that lets you breathe the best. Sip hot liquids and drink plenty of fluids. Apply moist heat by holding a warm, wet towel against your face or breathing in steam through a cloth or towel. Talk with your doctor before using an over-the-counter cold medicine. Some cold medicines can make your symptoms worse or cause other problems.
