Testicular cancer is a rare disease in men caused by abnormal growth of cells of the testicle. The testicles (or testes) are located inside the scrotum, the loose bag of skin that hangs below the penis. What causes testicular cancer and who is at risk? The causes of testicular cancer are unknown, but men born with an undescended testicle (one that remains in the abdominal cavity rather than descending into the scrotum) may be at greater risk of developing the disease. There are several types of testicular cancer. The most common are seminoma and teratoma. Seminomas are made up of a single type of cell, whereas teratomas consist of more than one type of testicular cell. Occasionally, the growth can consist of seminoma and teratoma. Other types of testicular cancer such as lymphoma, arise from lymphatic tissue (tissue that forms part of the immune system) within the testis and are extremely rare. Cancer of the testicles most often affects men aged between 15 and 35 years. While it is not a common cancer overall (being responsible for less than one per cent of all cancer deaths), it is one of the most common cancers affecting men in this age group. It is important for men to be aware of the disease and examine themselves regularly because, if caught early, testicular cancer can usually be treated and cured.

There are two broad types: seminoma and nonseminoma histologies. The nonseminoma group of cancers includes embryonal carcinoma, teratoma, yolk sac carcinoma and choriocarcinoma. TC-NET is the primary testicular cancer email support group. The list usually has somewhere between 400 and 450 subscribers. Many people on the list have been on it for years, but many others only stay online during the period between diagnosis and the end of treatment. Any topic related to testicular or extragonadal germ cell tumors is welcome, but this list does tend to be slightly more medical and treatment related than the other list. On average, the list generates 20-25 emails a day, less on weekends. There are two basic ways to subscribe to TC-NET: The recommend method for joining the list it to use the web interface located here . This interface is simple to use and makes it much easier to configure the list the way you want it. It is not known exactly what causes testicular cancer. Although it is still quite rare, the number of men who develop it has been steadily increasing for the past few years. The reason for this is not known, but research is going on all the time into possible causes. Testicular cancer is more common in men who have a testicle which has failed to descend. In the unborn child the testicles develop inside the abdomen between the kidneys and descend into the scrotum at birth or during the first year of life. If they move down later, or need surgery to bring them down, this increases the risk of testicular cancer. Men with a brother or father who has had testicular cancer are more at risk of developing it (although the risk is still small). A particular gene has been found in some men with testicular cancer. It is possible that this gene is inherited and may be the reason why testicular cancer sometimes occurs in brothers or sons of men who have had the disease.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors Return to top Although the exact cause of testicular cancer has not been identified, several predisposing factors seem to increase risk. These include a past medical history of undescended testicle(s), abnormal testicular development, Klinefelter's syndrome (a sex chromosome disorder that may be characterized by low levels of male hormones, sterility, breast enlargement, and small testes), or previous testicular cancer. Other factors are under investigation as possible causes, such as exposure to certain chemicals and infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A family history of testicular cancer may increase risk. There is no link between vasectomy (an operation to cause sterility) and elevated risk of testicular cancer. Between 6,000 and 8,000 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancers each year. Although testicular cancer accounts for 1% of all cancers in men, it is the most common form of cancer in young men 15 to 40 years old. It may also occur in young boys, but only about 3% of all testicular cancer is found in this group. White American men have about five times the risk of African-American men and more than twice the risk of Asian-American men. The risk for testicular cancer has doubled among white Americans in the past 40 years but has remained the same for African-Americans. The reasons for these differences are not known.
