He studied medicine in Turin before joining the Italian Resistance movement against Benito Mussolini during the Second World War After the war Dulbecco emigrated to the United States and worked with Salvador Luria at the University of Indiana before moving on to the University of California. Dulbecco discovered the molecular basis of the cancer-causing properties of a group of viruses. In 1975 he won the Nobel Prize for Medicine with David Baltimore and Howard Temin for their work on the cancer-causing properties of the genes of papovaviruses. Ed è tutto il "Sole che ride" a levare gli scudi. I Verdi sono infatti uno degli bersagli polemici (più o meno espliciti) degli scienziati che lamentano un atteggiamento prevenuto verso interi settori della ricerca, a esempio quella genetica. Ma i Verdi non ci stanno e contrattaccano: "Organizzeremo - spiega la leader, Grazia Francescato - una contromanifestazione di scienziati, che condividono la nostra posizione sul tema. Saranno almeno 700". E sempre Francescato, in un comunicato congiunto con Pecoraro, lancia uno slogan: "Non siamo oscurantisti, siamo contro 'scienza pazza', contro i dottor Stranamore".

Spero che i Quindici sappiano prendere decisioni il più presto possibile e innanzitutto che organizzino una repressione accresciuta e armonizzata dei traffici di essere umani".

I stayed in that city for a short time; my father was called into the army (World War I) and we moved to the north, Cuneo and Torino. At the end of the war my father, who was in the "Genio Civile", was sent to Imperia, Liguria, where we stayed for many years. The life I remember begins at Imperia, where I went to school, including the Ginnasio-Liceo "De Amicis". What I remember most of that period, besides my family and the few friends, was the rocky beach where I spent most of my time during the summer holiday, and a small meterological observatory, where I used to spend lots of my free time throughout the year. There I developed a strong liking for physics, which I put to good use by building an electronic seismograph, probably one of the first of its kind, which actually worked. I graduated from high school at 16 (1930) and went to the University in Torino. Although I liked especially physics and mathematics for which I had considerable talent, I decided to study medicine. This profession had for me a strong emotional appeal, which was reinforced by having an uncle who was an excellent surgeon.

Además de una retribución en metálico, el ganador del Premio Nobel recibe también una medalla de oro y un diploma con su nombre y el campo en que ha logrado tal distinción. Los jueces pueden dividir cada premio entre dos o tres personas, aunque no está permitido repartirlo entre más de tres. Si se considerara que más de tres personas merecen el premio, se concedería de forma conjunta. El fondo está controlado por un comité de la Fundación Nobel, compuesto por seis miembros en cada mandato de dos años: cinco elegidos por los administradores de los organismos contemplados en el testamento, y el sexto nombrado por el Gobierno sueco. Los seis miembros serán ciudadanos suecos o noruegos. De acuerdo con la voluntad de Nobel, se han establecido institutos separados en Suecia y Noruega para favorecer los objetivos de la Fundación con el fin de potenciar cada uno de los cinco campos en los que se conceden los galardones. En 1968, para conmemorar su 300 aniversario, el Banco Nacional de Suecia creó el Premio de Ciencias Económicas Banco de Suecia en Memoria de Alfred Nobel, que sería otorgado por la Real Academia Sueca de las Ciencias (conocida con anterioridad por el nombre de Academia Sueca de las Ciencias).
