Extractions: Dr. George Olah, 1994 Nobel Laureate, Visits CSULB Dr. George Olah, 1994 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, was a guest of the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics on March 27. Dr. Olah spent the day visiting with faculty and students and giving two lectures to the University Community. Dr. Olah heads the Loker Hydrocarbon Institute at the University of Southern California where he is also Professor of Chemistry. He is internationally known for his work on the Friedel-Crafts reaction, superacid chemistry, carbocation chemistry, the chemistry of hypervalent carbon, and numerous applications of useful and significant new synthetic reagents and methods. The author of over 1000 scientific papers, 100 patents and 15 books, he has received a variety of awards including the ACS Award for Petroleum Chemistry, the Roger Adam's Medal and the Award for Creativity in Synthetic Organic Chemistry. Dr. Olah is a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His morning lecture was essentially a warning to society about its reckless use of petroleum resources. Petroleum, for all practical purposes, is a non-renewable resource, and its depletion is occurring faster than new sources can be found. Eventually, deposits of oil from which petroleum can be practically recovered will all but disappear. At present there are no economically feasible alternatives to the use of oil, other than coal, which also is a non-renewable resource. We are living in a "fool's paradise", with escalating uses for oil and no plans in place to cope with the inevitability of its disappearance as a recoverable resource.

PHOTO BY MADELEINE JACOBS O nce-in-a-lifetime opportu nity. Those are the words that kept coming up in conversation with students who attended the 52nd Meeting of the Nobel Laureates And yet these dreams and much more came true this year, and have come true each summer for hundreds of students, on the island of Lindau, an enchanting medieval city located in Lake Constance. Lindau has been the unusual setting for bringing together Nobel Laureates and students since 1951, when the first meeting was held under the auspices of Count Lennart Bernadotte. This year's meeting attracted more than 600 undergraduate and graduate students and postdoctoral fellowsalmost all of them chemistry students and fellowsand 17 Nobel Laureates. Typically, the laureates are invited to Lindau in three-year cycles alternating among physicists, chemists, and medical scientists.
