Z Archbishop of Canterbury, Doctor of the Church; born at Aosta a Burgundian town on the confines of Lombardy, died 21 April, 1109. His father, Gundulf, was a Lombard who had become a citizen of Aosta, and his mother, Ermenberga, came of an old Burgundian family. Like many other saints, Anselm learnt the first lessons of piety from his mother, and at a very early age he was fired with the love of learning. In after life he still cherished the memories of childhood, and his biographer, Eadmer, has preserved some incidents which he had learnt from the saint's own lips. The child had heard his mother speak of God , Who dwelt on high ruling all things. Living in the mountains, he thought that Heaven must be on their lofty summits. "And while he often revolved these matters in his mind, it chanced that one night he saw in a vision that he must go up to the summit of the mountain and hasten to the court of God God's God pallium . But here was a fresh occasion of trouble. The Antipope Clement was disputing the authority of Urban II , who had been recognized by France and Normandy. Extractions: Back to Table of Contents Philosophical Writings As a metaphysician Anselm was a realist, and one of his earliest works, De fide Trinitatis , was an attack on the doctrine of the Trinity as expounded by the nominalist Roscelin. His most celebrated works are the Monologium and Proslogium , both aiming to prove the existence and nature of God. The Cur deus homo , in which he develops views of atonement and satisfaction which are still held by orthodox theologians. The two first named were written at Bec. The last was begun in England " in great tribulation of heart," and finished at Schiavi, a mountain villaffe of Apulia, where Anselm enjoyed a few months of rest in 1098. His meditations and prayers are edifying and often highly impressive. In the Monologium he argues that from the idea of being there follows the idea of a highest and absolute, i.e. self-existent Being, from which all other being derives its existences revival of the ancient cosmological argument. In the Proslogium the idea of the perfect being-" than which nothing greater can be thought "-cannot be separated from its existence. For if the idea of the perfect Being, thus present in consciousness, lacked existence, a still more perfect Being could be thought, of which existence would be a necessary metaphysical predicate, and thus the most perfect Being would be the absolutely Real. In its most simple form, this first version of the ontological argument is as follows:

What then is the strength and power of your salvation and where is it found ? Christ has brought you back to life. He is the good Samaritan who healed you. He is the good friend who redeemed you and set you free by laying down his life for you. Christ did all this. So the strength of your salvation is the strength of Christ. Where is the strength of Christ?

Nova, t. 9, p. 223. Ceillier, t. 21, p. 267. St. Anselm applied himself diligently to the study of every part of theology, by the clear light of scripture and tradition. Whilst he was prior at Bec, he wrote his Monologium, so called because in this work he speaks alone, explaining the metaphysical proofs of the existence and nature of God. Also his Proslogium, or contemplation of God's attributes in which he addresses his discourse to God, or himself. The Meditations, commonly called the Manual of St. Austin, are chiefly extracted out of this book. It was censured by a neighboring monk, which occasioned the saint's Apology. These and other the like works, show the author to have excelled in metaphysics all the doctors of the church since St. Austin. He likewise wrote, whilst prior, On Truth, on Free-will, and On the Fall of the Devil, or, On the Origin of Evil; also his Grammarian, which is in reality a treatise on Dialectic, or the Art of Reasoning.

Feast: April 21 On his father's death Anselm consulted his superior as to whether he should return to Italy and manage the estates he had inherited, or remain in France and enter the Church. Lanfranc, fearing to influence unduly his young disciple and friend, referred him to Maurillus, archbishop of Rouen, and on his advice Anselm, then twenty-seven, became a monk. Three years later, when Lanfranc was appointed abbot of St. Stephen's at nearby Caen, Anselm succeeded him as prior at Bec. There was some criticism of this rapid promotion, but he soon won the allegiance of the other monks, including that of his bitterest rival. This was an undisciplined young man named Osbern, whom Anselm gradually persuaded to lead a more serious life and whom he nursed tenderly in his last illness. With regard to the education of the young, Anselm held very liberal views. To an abbot who was lamenting the poor success of his efforts, he said: "If you planted a tree in your garden, and bound it down on all sides, so that it could not spread years branches, what kind of a tree would it prove when in after years you gave it room to spread? Would it not be useless, with its boughs all twisted and tangled? . . . But that is how you treat your boys . . . cramping them with fears and blows and debarring them from the enjoyment of any freedom." In 1078, after serving as prior for fifteen years, Anselm was chosen abbot of Bec. The office entailed visits to England, where the abbey owned a great deal of property and where his old teacher Lanfranc, now archbishop of Canterbury, was upholding the rights of the Church against the successful and arrogant King William I. Anselm was received in England with honor, even by the King himself. The English monk Eadmers Anselm's biographer, writes that he had a winning way of giving instruction, pointed with homely illustrations which even the simplest could understand.

Extractions: Anselm was born in Aosta around 1033. He entered the Monastery of Bec which, under Lanfranc , had become a centre of learning. Anselm succeeded Lanfranc as Abbot and, on a visit to England in 1093, he was compelled by William Rufus to accept the Archbishopric of Canterbury. William, however, continually thwarted and harassed him, by plundering and oppressing the Church, so that Anselm was driven to lay his difficulties before the Pope. The appeal met with little success but, upon the death of William, he was recalled by King Henry I and the voice of all the people. Fresh difficulties arose however, when Henry expressed his desire that Anselm should receive the investiture from his own hands. This, Anselm declined unless it were sanctioned by the Pope. He was inflexible in his determination to protect the rights and liberties of the Church and, finally, the conflict was settled by a compromise, two years before his death which took place in 1109. His honesty of purpose, his undaunted courage, his saintly character and, above all, his great learning, entitle him to be regarded as one of the chief glories of the English Church. He was the author of many theological and philosophical works of which the most famous was Cur Deus Homo. He was canonized by Pope Alexander VI in 1494.

The purpose of the Annual Meeting is to assess as a community, the work of the past year, to elect representatives and to share ideas regarding the future vision of the ministry. After reports from staff members and team leaders, the following individuals were elected: Student Representatives to the Advisory Board (1 year terms) *Mark Sessing *Sharlene Thompson Non-Student Representatives to the Advisory Board (3 year terms) *Jared Smith *Clint Davis Delegates to Diocesan Convention *David Bassity *Owen Pollard Continued concentration on issues of social concern such as ministry with the elderly and mentally ill, the Urban Immersion Experience and community diversity were among the most discussed topics. Additionally, maintaining a good music program, traditional, quality worship and a collaborative ministry between lay and clergy was stressed.

Extractions: Saint Benedict (480-547), was born in Nursia, a town in central Italy, and began studies in Rome before embarking on a hermit's life in a cave at Subiaco. He later founded the monastery of Monte Cassino where he wrote his Holy Rule. In the course of the Middle Ages, all monasticism in the West was brought under the Rule of Saint Benedict. Through the prayer and work of his followers, Benedict profoundly influenced the spiritual, educational, and cultural life of Western civilization. The first Benedictine foundation in the United States was established in 1846 at Latrobe, PA. This monastery, Saint Vincent Archabbey, became the first abbey of the American-Cassinese Congregation. From here, a daughter house, Saint Mary's Abbey in Newark, NJ, was founded in 1857. Thirty-one years later, the Benedictines came to New Hampshire from Newark in order to found a parish and plan their educational and monastic endeavors. In the following year, 1889, a monastery and school were established on a hilltop overlooking Manchester. From the original school emerged Saint Anselm College, a four- year, liberal arts institution, which has won national recognition for its academic excellence. Nearly 2,000 students attend the College.

Founded in 1976, the Center was originally named St. Anselm's Immigrant and Refugee Community Center. It provides much needed aid to new residents in our community who face problems with language, employment, and adjustment to a new culture. Since the beginning, St. Anselm's has maintained its grass-roots philosophy in efforts to address the areas of assistance among diverse ethnic and cultural communities in Orange County. While the original emphasis was on Southeast Asian refugees-primarily Vietnamese - due to recent political upheavals in the world, the Center is also asked to provide assistance to families and individuals from Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Central America. Without the assistance St. Anselm's provides, many new residents face insurmountable problems that jeopardize their ability to become self-sufficient and contributing members of our community.
