    Extractions: St. Anselm's Abbey owes its beginning to the initiative of Father Thomas Verner Moore. A larger than life figure, Fr. Thomas began his religious life as a Paulist priest. His chosen apostolate was that of scholarly research in the then new discipline of Psychology. While studying and teaching at the Catholic University of America he came to the conviction that he needed a deeper spirituality, the kind afforded by Benedictine monasticism. He conceived the notion of a Benedictine community of university professors who would lead the monastic life in community while carrying on their work of research and teaching. Preparations in Washington and at Fort Augustus Abbey, Scotland Fr. Thomas found a sponsor in the English Benedictine Congregation, specifically Fort Augustus Abbey in Scotland. He and three other priests went there for a novitiate in August 1923. Meanwhile Fr. Benedict Brosnahan, an American who had become a monk at Downside Abbey in England, decided to join the community. He was at the time a member of a new foundation sponsored by Downside in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Fr. Benedict supervised preparations at a property near Catholic University, a former pig farm with a house on Sargent Road. This house became the first monastery and was forever after known as "the sausage factory."

The Ontological argument was first written by St. Anselm of Canterbury in the 11th C. and atempts to prove the existence of God by reason alone. God is perfect. Existence is a positive property, therefore it will be possed by a being that is perfect. St. Thomas Aquinas (13th C.) owns the most famous put down of this argument; that of "a miserable tautology". It fails, because statement one, when written fully, is either a) If anything is God, then it is perfect. i.e. if God exists it is perfect and it therefore exists, which proves nothing. Or b) There is a God who is perfect i.e. assuming God's existence at the start. Kant, in the 18th C. drew fault with statement two. He claimed that existence is not a 'predictate'. i.e. it does not designate a property. This means that a being can hold all positive properties (i.e. be perfect) and not exist and therefore the argument falls apart. My personal rendering of the Ontological Argument goes as follows: God, by definition, is the greatest being.

Ontology is the theory of being. This branch of philosophy attempts to answer such questions as: What is real? What is the relationship between the mind and the body? Thus Anselm's ontological proof attempts to answer the question of whether or not God is real. A few things are interesting about the argument. One is that he makes no appeal to sense data, his proof relies on pure reason (In philosophical terms, this is called a priori ). Second, he equates the phrase "most perfect" with "most real." (Both of these observations demonstrate how heavily Anselm was influenced by Plato.) Anselms' argument begins with a reference to fool in Psalms 53:1, " who says in heart, 'There is no God.'" But, according to Anselm, even the fool is convinced that something exists in the understanding at least, than which nothing greater can be conceived. For when he hears of this he understands it.... And assuredly that than which nothing greater can be conceived, cannot exist in the understanding alone. For suppose it exists in the understanding alone: then it can be conceived to exist in reality, which is greater.... Hence, there is no doubt that there exists a being than which nothing greater can be conceived, and it exists both in the understanding and in reality... and this being thou art, O Lord, our God.
