    Extractions: from Global Encyclopedia Roger Bacon (1214-1294) was an English philosopher during the Middle Ages. Bacon is also considered a scientist because he insisted on observing things for himself instead of depending on what people had written. Most of his experiments involved optics, the study of light. His work encouraged people to try experiments of their own, and this helped bring about the Rennaisance. Bacon's family appears to have been well off, but in the stormy reign of Henry III. their property was despoiled and several members of the family were driven into exile. Roger completed his studies at Oxford, though not, as current traditions assert, at Merton or at Brasenose, neither of which had been founded. His abilities were speedily recognized by his contemporaries, and he enjoyed the friendship of such eminent men as Adam de Marisco and Robert Grosseteste, bishop of Lincoln. Very little is known of Bacon's life at Oxford; it is said he took clerical orders in 1233, and this is not improbable. In the following year, or perhaps later, he crossed over to France and studied at the university of Paris, then the center of intellectual life in Europe. The two great monastic orders, Franciscans and Dominicans, were in the vigor of youth, and had already begun to take the lead in theological discussion. Alexander of Hales was the oracle of the Franciscans, while the rival order rejoiced in Albertus Magnus and Thomas Aquinas. The scientific training which Bacon had received, mainly from the study of the Arab writers, showed him the manifold defects in the systems reared by these doctors. Aristotle was known but in part, and that part was rendered well-nigh unintelligible through the vileness of the translations; yet not one of those professors would learn Greek. The Scriptures read, if at all, in the erroneous versions were being deserted for the Sentences of Peter Lombard.

Many discoveries have been credited to him, including the magnifying lens. He foresaw the extensive use of gunpowder and mechanical cars, boats, and planes. Bacon was known as Doctor Mirabilis (Wonderful Teacher). In 1266, at the invitation of his friend Pope Clement IV, he began his Opus majus/Great Work , a compendium of all branches of knowledge. In 1268 he sent this with his Opus minus/Lesser Work and other writings to the pope. In 1277 Bacon was condemned and imprisoned by the Christian church for certain novelties (heresy) and not released until 1292.

Bacon war bestrebt, die Theologie von der profanen Wissenschaft zu trennen, wobei er jene nur auf Beobachtung, Versuch und Berechnung gegründet wissen wollte. Obwohl er diese Forderungen in der Praxis nur selten erfüllte, wird er als einer der ersten echten Naturforscher des Mittelalters bezeichnet. Von 1244 bis ca. 1252 studierte Bacon in Paris und hörte dort u.a. Albertus Magnus dozieren. Um 1257 trat er dem Franziskanerorden bei, ohne jedoch offenbar für den Dienst in einem strengen Orden geboren gewesen zu sein. Durch Verbreitung eigenwilliger Lehren machte sich Bacon bei seinen Oberen unbeliebt. Als Papst Clemens IV., mit dem Bacon korrespondierte, 1268 starb, konnten seine geheimwissenschaftlichen Neigungen nur dazu führen, dass ihn sein Ordensgeneral zu einer Klosterhaft verurteilte. Die gelegentlich geäußerte Annahme, der Anlass hiefür wäre das Werk Speculum astronomiae gewesen, wurde von dem Historiker L. Thorndike mit guten Gründen widerlegt, da dieses Werk sicherlich von Albertus Magnus stammt.

How long he was detained is unknown, but he was free in when his Compendium of Theology appeared. He was more interested in mathematics, the natural sciences, and languages than many of his great contemporaries, and placed great emphasis on the experimental sciences. He remained in Paris after completing his studies and taught for a time at the University of Paris. Soon after his return to England in about 1251, he entered the religious order of the Franciscans and settled at Oxford. He carried on active studies and did experimental research, mainly in alchemy, optics, and astronomy. Bacon was critical of the methods of learning of the times, and in the late 1260s, at the request of Pope Clement IV, he wrote his Opus Majus (Major Work). In this work he represented the necessity of a reformation in the sciences through different methods of studying languages and nature. The Opus Majus was an encyclopedia of all science, embracing grammar and logic, mathematics, physics, experimental research, and moral philosophy. The response of the pope to Bacon's masterpiece is not known, but the work could not in any circumstances have had much effect in Bacon's time, because it reached Clement during the period of his fatal illness. Bacon's revolutionary ideas about the study of science caused his condemnation by the Franciscans for his heretical views. In 1278 the general of the Franciscan order, Girolamo Masci, later Pope Nicholas IV, forbade the reading of Bacon's books and had Bacon arrested. After ten years in prison, Bacon returned to Oxford. He wrote Compendium Studii Theologiae (A Compendium of the Study of Theology, 1292) shortly before his death.
