Nel 1920 conseguì il dottorato in filosofia, con Richard Herbertz, all'Univ. di Berna presentando una tesi sul Concetto di critica d'arte nel romanticismo ted. Dal 1920 fu attivo come critico letterario a Berlino; nel 1933 andò esule in Francia. Nel 1936, con lo pseudonimo di Detlef Holz, pubblicò a Lucerna Uomini ted. . B. rimase legato al messianismo ebraico anche dopo aver fatto ricorso al marxismo per la sua analisi critica della borghesia e del fascismo. B. reiste 1917 in die Schweiz, um sich von seinen Ischiasanfällen zu heilen. Bis 1919 lebte er in St. Moritz, Zürich, Bern und Muri bei Bern. 1920 promovierte er beim Philosophen Richard Herbertz an der Univ. Bern mit der Dissertation "Der Begriff der Kunstkritik in der dt. Romantik". Ab 1920 Literaturkritiker in Berlin, ab 1933 im Exil in Frankreich. 1936 veröffentlichte B. in Luzern unter dem Pseudonym Detlef Holz "Deutsche Menschen". B. blieb dem jüd. Messianismus auch nach der Hinwendung zum Marxismus verpflichtet, den er in die Analyse von Bürgertum und Faschismus kritisch einbezog. Die Wiederentdeckung des revolutionären Intellektuellen B. nach dem 2. Weltkrieg beeinflusste auch die schweiz. Studentenbewegung nach 1968.

Benjamin was distancing himself at the time from Gustav Wyneken's Freie Schulgemeinde and his closing sentence recalls Simmel's "individuelles Gesetz" rather than the youth movement: "Jeder wird seine eignen Gebote finden, der die oberste Forderung an sein Leben herantragt."
