Extractions: La figura forse più rappresentativa e influente del movimento neopositivistico fu Rudolf Carnap (1891-1970). Nato a Ronsdorf in Germania, seguì le lezioni di Frege a Jena e si addottorò in Fisica a Friburgo nel 1921. Nel 1926 divenne Professore a Vienna ed entrò a far parte del Wiener Kreis, dirigendo la rivista "Erkenntnis" insieme a Reichenbach. Successivamente insegnò nell'Università di Praga e dal 1936 in quella di Chicago, da cui si trasferì nel 1952 a Princeton e nel 1954 nell'Università di Los Angeles, città dove morì. Nella sua prima opera sistematica, " La costruzione logica del Mondo " (1928), Carnap intende mostrare come il mondo si strutturi logicamente in un sistema di conoscenze, eretto a partire da una base empirica , la cui unità minima è l'esperienza vissuta elementare ( in tedesco, Elementarerlebnis ). Egli si richiama ai risultati delle indagini condotte dalla cosiddetta "psicologia della forma" ( Gestalpsychologie ), secondo cui i contenuti della percezione non sono semplici aggregati di elementi, ma totalità strutturate: nell'invarianza di tale struttura risiede il loro significato. Costituire un oggetto equivale, allora, a mostrare il significato del segno corrispondente ad esso, indicando i criteri di verità delle proposizioni in cui tale segno può comparire. A sua volta il significato delle proposizioni si costituisce solo entro un 'sistema', che stabilisca le regole di formazione e trasformazione delle proposizioni stesse. Attraverso queste operazioni di costituzione, l'esperienza si presenta come un campo strutturato secondo leggi logiche invarianti e oggettive, puramente formali. Grazie al

Extractions: The Committee for Philosophy and the Sciences (CPaS) is a research and teaching unit of the Department of Philosophy. (CPaS replaces two previous committees, the Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science, and the Committee for Cognitive Studies. Students interested in history of technology should contact Professor Robert Friedel of the Department of History. CPaS administers an interdisciplinary graduate specialization leading to an MA or PhD degree in philosophy for students who are interested in pursuing philosophically informed foundational research in an area of science, and will be of particular interest to students who already have a substantial background in that science. Relevant sciences include physics, biology, neuroscience psychology, computer science, artificial intelligence, and linguistics, all of which are strongly represented on campus. There are two tracks, with different course requirements: a philosophy of science track and a cognitive studies track. CPaS has strong links to science departments on campus, including Physics and Biology, and also to the recently developed graduate programs in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science (NACS) and Behavior, Evolution, Ecology and Systematics (BEES), as well as to the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). In addition,students have available the research facilities of several area universities, research institutes, and specialized libraries. Of particular interest to CPaS students are the resources of the Center for the History of Physics at the American Institute of Physics in College Park, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Libraries. All are easily accessible by rapid transit.
