Nur einem Zufall ist es zu verdanken, dass er statt unter elterliche Obhut, wie seine zahlreichen Geschwister in der Bandwirkerei zu arbeiten, eine gediegene Ausbildung erhielt. Im Jahre 1770 wurde Freiherr Friedrich Ernst Haubold von Miltitz bei einem Besuch in Rammenau zufällig Zeuge eines Predigtspieles der Kinder des Ortes, in dem ihm die rhetorische Begabung und Intelligenz des "Predigers" Fichte auffiel und er daraufhin beschloss, die Ausbildung des Achtjährigen zu finanzieren. So erwarteten Fichte glückliche Jahre in der Obhut des kinderlosen Pfarrerehepaares Kerbel in Niederau, wo er vor allem Unterweisungen in Latein, Griechisch und Hebräisch erhielt. Im zwölften Lebensjahr trat er in die Stadtschule von Meißen ein und wechselte bald darauf in die berühmteste der drei Landesschulen Sachsens - die Fürstenschule Pforta bei Naumburg. Sein Theologiestudium begann er 1780 zunächst in Jena und wechselte ein Jahr später nach Leipzig. Allerdings verhinderte seine wirtschaftliche Not, die ihn zu Stellungen als Hauslehrer zwang, einen regulären Studienabschluss. Sein Mäzen Freiherr von Miltitz war bereits 1774 verstorben und dessen Familie verringerte in den Folgejahren stetig die Zahlungen für Fichtes Ausbildung, bevor sie diese mit Studienbeginn völlig einstellten. 1788 bot sich ihm die Möglichkeit als Hauslehrer nach Zürich zu gehen. In der Schweiz erholte er sich nicht nur von den strapaziösen Studienjahren, sondern lernte auch seine zukünftige Frau, die sieben Jahre ältere Marie Johanne Rahn, eine Nichte Klopstocks, kennen.

On the one hand, he pursued the purely ‘scientific’ or ‘systematic’ goal of grounding and elaborating a new philosophical standpoint and system of transcendental philosophy, working at a level of abstraction that finds few rivals in the philosophical literature. On the other hand, he longed to address the broadest possible audience, to stimulate his listeners and readers to genuine action, and thereby to contribute directly to the moral and political reform of his age. Thus, in addition to his highly technical, ‘private’ lectures on the first principles of his new system, Fichte also delivered a weekly series of ‘public’ lectures addressed to the entire University community. Despite the enormous differences between their intended audiences and styles of presentation, Fichte saw an intimate connection between his purely ‘scientific’ and broadly ‘popular’ efforts. Life merely as such, the mere continuance of changing existence, has in any case never had any value for him, he has wished for it only as the source of what is permanent. But this permanence is promised to him only by the continuous and independent existence of his nation. In order to save his nation he must be ready even to die that it may live, and that he may live in it the only life for which he has ever wished. So it has always been, although it has not always been expressed in such general terms and so clearly as we express it here. What inspired the men of noble mind among the Romans, whose frame of mind and way of thinking still live and breathe among us in their works of art, to struggles and sacrifices, to patience and endurance for the fatherland? They themselves express it often and distinctly. It was their firm belief in the eternal continuance of their Roma , and their confident expectation that they themselves would eternally continue to live in this eternity in the stream of time. In so far as this belief was well-founded, and they themselves would have comprehended it if they had been entirely clear in their own minds, it did not deceive them. To this very day there still lives in our midst what was truly eternal in their eternal Roma. . . .

    Extractions: Fichte, Johann Gottlieb 1762-1814, German philosopher. After studying theology at Jena and working as a tutor in Zurich and Leipzig, he became interested in Kantian philosophy. He received public recognition for his Versuch einer Kritik aller Offenbarung [critique of all revelation] (1792), which was at first attributed to Kant himself, who highly commended the work. As professor of philosophy at Jena (1793-99), Fichte produced a number of works, including the Wissenschaftslehre [science of knowledge] (1794). Charges of atheism forced him to leave Jena for Berlin where he restated his views in Die Bestimmung des Menschen (1800, tr. The Vocation of Man, rev. ed. 1956). His Reden an die deutsche Nation (1808, tr., Addresses to the German People, 1923) established him as a leader of liberal nationalism. After several brief professorships, he served (1810-12) as rector of the new Univ. of Berlin. Fichte's dialectic idealism attempted unification of the theoretical and practical aspects of cognition that had been set apart by Kant. He did this by rejecting the noumenal realm of Kant and by making the active indivisible ego the source of the structure of experience. From there his dialectical logic led to the postulation of a moral will of the universe, a God or absolute ego from which all eventually derives and which therefore unites all knowing. Fichte's philosophy had considerable influence in his day, but later he was remembered more as a patriot and liberal. Although he was in political disrepute in his own day and after the reaction of 1815, he became a hero not only to the revolutionaries of 1848 but also to the conservatives of 1871. His political theory had socialistic aspects that influenced Ferdinand Lassalle.

Durch Zeichen, sage ich, also nicht durch Handlungen. - Ein vernünftiges Wesen kann aus diesen meinen Handlungen auf das, was ich gedacht habe, schließen. Dies heißt aber nicht 'Sprache'. Nel 1799, tuttavia, Fichte fu accusato di ateismo e costretto a rassegnare le dimissioni. Continuò a scrivere e a tenere conferenze divenute celebri, tanto che nel 1805 ottenne la cattedra di filosofia a Erlangen e nel 1810 divenne il primo rettore elettivo della nuova università di Berlino.
