Extractions: from Oxford University Press Geulincx, Arnold An occasionalist, a modified Cartesian, and an anti-Aristotelian, Geulincx moved from Louvain to Leiden, and simultaneously from Catholicism to Calvinism, in 1658. Using the analogy of two synchronized but otherwise unconnected clocks which strike simultaneously, he pointed out the possibility of there being two law-governed areas with no causal interaction. Applying this to the general case he held that though God acts immediately and in a lawlike manner in the realms of both thought and extension, there is no interaction between the two. Like Descartes, Geulincx was a plenist who held that body and extension are coextensive. Hence, given his supposition that the universe is infinite, so is matter. Motion, however, may not be. Beyond the universe of events lies infinite space: 'completely solid, completely dark, harder than any adamant'.

Extractions: On the other side, the last divisions of Hills and Ewells corps formed up opposite the new Federal position, and Longstreets corps prepared to attack its left. Owing, however, to misunderstandings between Lee and Longstreet (q.v.), the Confederates did not attack early on the morning of the 2nd, so that Meades army had plenty cii time to make its dispositions. The Federal line at this time occupied the horse-shoe ridge, the right of which was formed by Culps Hill, and the centre by the Cemetery hill, whence the left wing stretched southward, the III. corps on the left, however, being thrown forward considerably. The XII. held Cuips, the remnant of the I. and XI. the Cemetery hills. On the left was the II., and in its advanced positionthe famous Salient the III., soon to be supported by the V.; the VI., with the reserve artillery, formed the general reserve. It was late iii the day when the Confederate attack was made, and valuable time had been lost, but Longstreets troops advanced with great spirit. The III. ,~ ; Y// -)~kj i I ~ 5t.~~-I~ ~ I

Most of it is amusing stuff about how people found the various Pages, and how well their traffic is running. From time to time, I may add other stuff, but this will probably remain fairly static until I get one thousand visits. In retrospect, I wish I had documented when each of these sections had been launched, but I didn't think to at the time. Oh, well; it's not like this is a wildly popular site across the globe or anything. Which reminds me; tell your friends about the Pages , and link to them if you have your own site (the Main Page is link-free ). Unless noted otherwise, all of the web searches mentioned were done through Google.com The stuff that started everything makes for some of the most interesting web search material.
