Extractions: died April 7, 1836, London Social philosopher, political journalist, and religious dissenter who anticipated the English Romantic literary movement with his writings advancing atheism, anarchism , and personal freedom. Godwin's idealistic liberalism was based on the principle of the absolute sovereignty and competence of reason to determine right choice. An optimist regarding man's future perfectibility, he combined cultural determinism with a doctrine of extreme individualism. The object of his principal work, An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, and Its Influence on General Virtue and Happiness (1793), was to reject conventional government by demonstrating the corrupting evil and tyranny inherent in its power of manipulation. He proposed in its place small self-subsisting communities. He argued that social institutions fail because they impose on man generalized thought categories and preconceived ideas, which make it impossible to see things as they are. Among his other writings are The Enquirer (1797), a collection of essays;

Extractions: "Universal Benevolence." The English Romantic Movement started just about when the 18th century ended. The movement with its "high thought and warm feelings," a reaction to the "vices and follies of the world," continued throughout the first quarter of the 19th century. During this period there came to the forefront certain literary and political agitators, who brought about, beginning with the great Reform Bill of 1832, the law reforms that were to take place as the balance of the 19th century unfolded in England. We may mark the year 1793 as the beginning point of the English Romantic Movement; it was the year that William Godwin brought out his work, Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Political Justice William Godwin, born on March 3rd, 1756, at Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, came from a line of dissenting ministers. He was the seventh of thirteen children in the family; they were brought up in the Calvinistic faith, an upbringing which undoubtedly had a significant impact on Godwin. At the age of seventeen, William was sent to a theological academy at Hoxton, near London. After his graduation, he was to take a position as a minister at Stowmarket in Sulfolk. Within the year he was to leave Sulfolk and give up the ministry permanently. Godwin then carried himself to London, there to earn a precarious living by his pen.

William Godwin first appears in the Isle of Wight records in 1655 when Humphrey Clark leaves him a cow. William Godwin wrote his will 21 Nov, 1710 and it was recorded 26 Sept 1720 in Isle of Wight Co, VA. Thomas Griffen in his will dated 8 Nov, 1669 refers to him as my brother. William Godwin is mentioned as neighbor to John Whitley on Feb 21, 1670 and was named as appraiser for several estates. There was a Thomas Godwin who died intestate in Isle of Wight Co ca 1665 who as Dr Barry Hayes suggests may be the father of this William Godwin of Isle of Wight and Col. Thomas Godwin of Nansemond (will 1678).
