Hayek lived to see his doctrine and warnings justified by the failure of command and socialist economies in the late 1980's. The influence of the Kant-Friesian tradition on Hayek is evident in his use of two precepts: Hume's principle that the propositions of ethics cannot be proven, and Popper's principle that scientific knowledge proceeds by falsification, not by verification. Hume's principle was really just a reformulation of Aristotle's doctrine that the first principles of demonstration cannot themselves, by definition, be proven. Kant's conception of synthetic a priori propositions thus sought the truth of such propositions in some external ground that would unite subjects and predicates whose meanings are not analytically related. Hume is commonly misunderstood to doubt the reality of the principle of causality or of moral propositons expressing "oughts"; but Kant realized that Hume had no doubt of the truth of such matters and famously said that Hume's critics (showing little more understanding than many of his advocates today), "were ever taking for granted that which he doubted, and demonstrating with zeal and often with impudence that which he never thought of doubting..." Extractions: by Peter J. Boettke Friedrich A. Hayek, who died on March 23, 1992, at the age of 92, was probably the most prodigious classical liberal scholar of the 20th century. Though his 1974 Nobel prize was in Economic Science, his scholarly endeavors extended well beyond economics. He published 130 articles and 25 books ranging from technical economics to theoretical psychology, from political philosophy to legal anthropology, and from the philosophy of science to the history of ideas. Hayek was no mere dabbler; he was an accomplished scholar in each of these fields of inquiry. He made major contributions to our understanding in at least three different areas-government intervention, economic calculation under socialism, and development of the social structure. It is unlikely that we will see the likes of such a wide-ranging scholar of the human sciences again. Hayek was born into a family of intellectuals in Vienna on May 8,1899. He earned doctorates from the University of Vienna (1921 and 1923). During the early years of the 20th century the theories of the Austrian School of Economics, sparked by Menger's Principles of Economics (1871), were gradually being formulated and refined by Eugen Boehm-Bawerk, his brother-in-law, Friedrich Wieser, and Ludwig von Mises. When Hayek attended the University of Vienna, he sat in on one of Mises' classes, but found Mises' anti-socialist position too strong for his liking. Wieser was a Fabian socialist whose approach was more attractive to Hayek at the time, and Hayek became his pupil. Yet, ironically it was Mises, through his devastating critique of socialism published in 1922, who turned Hayek away from Fabian socialism.

He made fundamental contributions in political theory, psychology, and economics. In a field where the relevance of ideas often is eclipsed by expansions on an initial theory, many of his contributions are so remarkable that people still read them over forty years after they were written. Many graduate economics students today, for example, study his articles from the thirties and forties on economics and knowledge, deriving insights that some of their elders in the economics profession still do not totally understand. It would not be surprising if a substantial minority of economists still read and learn from his articles in the year 2050. One cause, he said, was increases in the money supply by the central bank. Such increases, he argued in Prices and Production, Hayek and Keynes were building their models of the world at the same time. They were familiar with each other's views and battled over their differences. Most economists believe that Keynes's General Theory won the war. Hayek, until his dying day, never believed that, and neither do other members of the Austrian school. Hayek believed that Keynesian policies to combat unemployment would inevitably cause inflation, and that to keep unemployment low, the central bank would have to increase the money supply faster and faster, causing inflation to get higher and higher.
