He was a formidable critic of his predecessor Immanuel Kant and a formative influence on Karl Marx. Through his influence on Marx, Hegel's thought has changed the course of nineteenth- and twentieth-century history. Hegel lived and worked in what we now know as Germany, although in his time the many independent states of the region had not been united into one nation. He came of age at the time of the French Revolution, sharing what he later called 'the jubilation of this epoch'. His career included periods as a private tutor, and nine years as the headmaster of a secondary school, before his growing reputation gained him a university chair. He ended his days as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Berlin, which under the reformed Prussian monarchy was becoming the intellectual centre of the German states.

Kunst geht vielmehr aus der absoluten Idee hervor, sie ist sinnliche Präsentation des absoluten Geistes als Ideal. Die Betonung liegt hier auf dem Adjektiv 'sinnlich', denn die eigentliche, reinste Darstellung der Wahrheit, der Ideen, des Geistes sieht Hegel in der Philosophie. Nur dort findet sich "das freie Denken des absoluten Geistes", nur dort "ist die Region der Wahrheit an sich selbst, nicht des relativ Wahren." Zwischen Philosophie und Kunst als Formen des absoluten Geistes steht die Religion. Der Mangel der Religion liegt nun darin, daß das 'Absolute' hier nicht, wie in der Philosophie begriffen, sondern bloß vorgestellt wird, für den endlichen Geist also noch ein An-sich-Seiendes ist.
