Marcuse lehrte an der Havard University und an der University of California. In seinen theoretischen Schriften verband er die Hegelsche Dialektik mit marxistischer Philosophie, einer dialektischen Geschichtstheorie und z.T. der Trieblehre Freuds. Sein Aufruf zur radikalen Oppposition gegen die bestehende Ordnung ließ ihn in der zweiten Hälfte der sechziger Jahre zum geistigen Führer der studentischen Linken werden. Marcuse starb 1979 in Starnberg.

Nato a Berlino il 19 luglio 1898 da ricca famiglia ebrea, si laureò nel 1921 a Friburgo. Nell'intero arco evolutivo dell'opera di Marcuse occorre anzitutto ricordare la sua ottima e vastissima preparazione di germanista, e il lavoro monumentale pubblicato a 24 anni come dissertazione di dottorato, Il Romanzo dell'artista nella letteratura tedesca (Der Deutsche Künstlerroman), che in quasi cinquecento pagine ripercorre questo genere letterario dall'epoca romantica, a fine Settecento, a Thomas Mann ; un'opera in cui è visibile l'influenza hegeliana, anche attraverso l'interpretazione di Giörgy Lukàcs. A Friburgo, dove si era laureato, tornò nel 1929 per studiare con Husserl e Heidegger, il risultato di questo periodo è L'ontologia di Hegel e la fondazione di una teoria della storicità , pubblicato nel 1932. Nello stesso anno, per tensioni con Heidegger, che si stava sempre più avvicinando al movimento nazionalsocialista, Marcuse lasciò Friburgo e divenne membro dell'Istituto di Francoforte ma poco dopo, con l'avvento del regime nazista, dovette abbandonare la Germania ed emigrare negli Stati Uniti. Qui per vari anni, sino al 1950, fu impegnato a lavorare per il Dipartimento di Stato americano, dal 1951 al 1954 fu anche incaricato di svolgere una ricerca sull'Unione Sovietica conclusa con la pubblicazione di
