Tämän jakson tärkein saavutus oli artikkeli "New Foundations for Mathematical Logic" American Mathematical Monthlyssa vuonna 1937. Tämä pieni artikkeli on sittemmin poikinut suuren määrän jatkotarkasteluja. Artikkeli on yhä vilkkaan tutkimuksen ja keskustelun kohde. Quinen loogiset tutkimukset olivat kuitenkin alusta lähtien filosofisesti motivoituja ja vähitellen hän keskittyi yhä enemmän filosofisten ongelmien tarkasteluun. Ensin esiin nousivat ontologiset kysymykset vuonna 1934 Mindissa ilmestyneen artikkelin "Ontological remarks on the propositional calculus" myötä. Ontologia säilytti asemansa yhtenä Quinen tärkeimmistä mielenkiinnon kohteista. Tutkimuksissaan hän terävöitti ontologisten kysymysten analyysia sekä käsitteli ontologisten sitoumusten ongelmaa. Ongelmat, jotka Quinen mukaan liittyvät modaalikonteksteihin kvantifiointiin, voidaan ratkaista luopumalla perinteisestä semantiikasta ja omaksumalla tilalle semantiikka, jossa ns. "aidot" singulaaritermit tai "rigidit designaattorit" viittaavat samaan olioon kaikissa mahdollisissa maailmoissa, joissa kyseinen olio on olemassa. Tämä "uuden referenssin teorian" perusajatus syntyi vastauksena Quinen kriittisille argumenteille ja se on paljossa velkaa hänen taustaongelmia koskevalle tarkalle analyysilleen.

Willard van Orman Quine war Logiker, hatte aber den Edgar-Pierce-Lehrstuhl für Philosophie in Harvard inne. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken gehörten die Bücher "The Ways of Paradox", "Quiddities" und "Word and Object". Der 1908 Geborene galt als einer der wichtigsten Philosophen Amerikas. Er schrieb auf einer uralten Schreibmaschine, auf der er einige Sonderzeichen gegen die üblichen hatte austauschen lassen, darunter das Fragezeichen. In einem Interview sagte er dazu, er brauche es nicht, er befasse sich nur mit dem, was sicher sei. Das passte, denn Quine hat immer betont, dass die Mathematik ihm lieber sei als die Philosophie, da jene sich nicht auf Meinungen, sondern auf Fakten gründe. Eine ironische Wendung nahm seine späte Forschung jedoch, indem sie sich mit Unbestimmtheiten befasste. Computer ließen Quine kalt, aber den Algorithmen, die sie benötigen, galt seine Leidenschaft. Und der Mengenlehre. In der Philosophie versuchte Quine, Wissenschaftsphilosophie und Theorie des Wissens (knowledge theory) zu vereinen. Durchgängig war bei Quine eine Skepsis gegenüber "Bedeutung" und anderen relationalen Begriffen am Werk. Er misstraute der "Analytik" und der "Modalität" und den darin festgelegten Beziehungen zwischen ihren Elementen. Daraus erwuchs eine neue Sicht der Kommunikation und der Beziehungen zwischen Sprache und Wirklichkeit. Quine straffte die herkömmliche Semantik, indem er "strenge Determinatoren" einforderte, die auf dasselbe Objekt verweisen, und zwar in allen möglichen Welten, in denen das Objekt existiert.
