After a long training and practice in the tradition of analytic philosophy, where he was well respected for his work in philosophy of mind and language, Rorty became important for literary theory when he repudiated that tradition to embrace a neopragmatism that converges with contemporary Continental theory on many major issues. Perhaps chief among these are anti-essentialism and antifoundationalism, the history of human thought and "truth," and the ineluctable hermeneutic and linguistic dimension of experience. Rorty's sympathetic readings of Martin Heidegger , Hans-Georg Gadamer, Jacques Derrida , and Michel Foucault have been very influential in engendering a fruitful dialogue between the Continental and Anglo-American philosophical traditions and between philosophy and literary theory. Rorty's concern with language as the constitutive core of all experience is evident already in his analytic period in the influential collection he edited, The Linguistic Turn (1967). Analytic philosophy regarded language as the foundational datum whose structure could be analyzed to provide the best account both of the nature of the world, which language represented, and of the human mind, which employed language and was structured by it. Richard Rorty has a provocative answer. Rorty is opening demanding territory, the relation of philosophy to moral and political transformation. He knows that it will not do to haul out the old logical machinery in answer. Instead, he offers philosophy's support for a specific social and political program, feminism . It is about time.
