   Extractions: Arthur Schopenhauer is frequently referred to as a pessimist who inaugurated an emphasis on the will in modern philosophy. His early education was in France and England; he entered the University of Gottingen as a medical student but transferred to Berlin in 1811 to study philosophy. His thesis, On the Fourfold Root of Sufficient Reason , was written in 1813. Though she had bitter and antagonistic relations him, his mother established a salon at Weimar which allowed him to meet literary figures, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whose conversations inspired Schopenhauer's On Vision and Colors in 1816. The World as Will and Representation , his major work, appeared in 1818. After his father's death he devoted himself entirely to philosophy, being able to live comfortably on his inheritance.

   Extractions: Certainly one of the greatest philosophers of the 19th century, Schopenhauer seems to have had more impact on literature (e.g. Thomas Mann) and on people in general than on academic philosophy. Perhaps that is because, first, he wrote very well, simply and intelligibly (unusual, we might say, for a German philosopher, and unusual now for any philosopher), second, he was the first Western philosopher to have access to translations of philosophical material from India , both Vedic and Buddhist , by which he was profoundly affected, to the great interest of many, and, third, his concerns were with the dilemmas and tragedies, in a religious or existential sense, of real life, not just with abstract philosophical problems. As Jung said: He was the first to speak of the suffering of the world, which visibly and glaringly surrounds us, and of confusion, passion, evil all those things which the [other philosophers] hardly seemed to notice and always tried to resolve into all-embracing harmony and comprehensiblility. Here at last was a philosopher who had the courage to see that all was not for the best in the fundaments of the universe.

La volontà si rivela come irrazionale e come bisogno, deficienza, quindi infelicità e dolore. Di questa infelicità cosmica l'uomo è drammatico centro: al suo dolore la natura resta indifferente. Il dolore è nota costante dell'esistenza; e tuttavia, Shopenhauer ravvisa una possibilità di liberazione nella contemplazione estetica : in essa l'uomo diviene puro, disinteressato soggetto conoscente che, intuendo l'idea, si sottrae, sia pure soltanto per alcuni istanti privilegiati, al dolore dell'esistenza. L' intuizione come strumento di conoscenza dell'essere, l'irrazionalità del tutto, l'indifferenza della natura al travaglio umano, l'arte come conoscenza e come liberazione dal dolore sono motivi che entreranno nella sensibilità e nella poetica del decadentismo.

Dopo la sua morte molti tentarono di ritrovare quelle preziose carte. L'esecutore testamentario, Wilhelm von Gwinner, dichiarò di averle distrutte per volontà dello stesso Schopenhauer. In realtà, prima di ricorrere al fuoco, le aveva utilizzate per scrivere una biografia del filosofo nella quale gli specialisti non tardarono a riconoscere passi, letteralmente citati, tratti da quelle pagine inedite, tanto che fu possibile ricostruire per congettura il testo originale. Questo libro segreto consisteva probabilmente in una trentina di fogli fitti di annotazioni autobiografiche, ricordi, riflessioni, massime, citazioni.
