Nach dem Tode seines Vaters brach er die Kaufmannsausbildung ab und studierte ab 1809 zunächst Naturwissenschaften, dann hauptsächlich Philosophie in Göttingen, ab 1811 in Berlin. Nach einer Italienreise (1818) wurde er 1820 Privatdozent in Berlin und siedelte wegen der Cholera-Epidemie 1831 nach Frankfurt um, wo er als Privatgelehrter lebte. Arthur Schopenhauer starb am 21.09.1860 in Frankfurt am Main. Pour lui en effet, l'unique chose en soi , étoffe de l'univers, c'est la Volonté, qui apparaît comme une puissance irrésistible de vie et de croissance. D'abord inconsciente dans les astres, les minéraux et les vivants inférieurs, elle ,engendre dans l'homme la conscience qui est d'ordre intellectuel, mais n'est pas une réalité nouvelle : c'est plutôt une excroissance illusoire projetant dans le monde irréel des idées ce que la Volonté réalise. Or, ce vouloir universel et éternel (dont chaque personne humaine, constituée par une conscience distincte, n'est qu'un moment fugitif), ayant pour essence le progrès, suscite dans la conscience un désir toujours nouveau de bonheur non assouvi, c'est-à-dire une souffrance. Et chaque degré de perfection, en multipliant les désirs, multiplie les douleurs; chaque satisfaction, en causant un désir plus grand, est source de douleurs plus grandes. Ainsi la douleur est l'état naturel de l'homme et le but où tend la nature. Notre monde est le pire qui soit (Pessimisme). C'est pourquoi, selon Schopenhauer, tous les préceptes d'une morale raisonnable se résument en un seul : "Détruire en nous, par tous les moyens, la Volonté de vivre". Mais pour atteindre ce but, les moyens violents ou physiques ne sont pas efficaces : Schopenhauer enseigne qu'il faut parcourir la double étape de l'art et de la contemplation boudhique.

    Extractions: Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher who is best known for his pessimistic philosophy that human beings are simply manifestations of their own egotistical wills, rarely thinking much about the concerns or needs of others and only seeking to survive. One of the consequences of his idea of will being the ultimately reality of the world is that a person's individual will cannot be under the direct control of his or her reason. Instead, reason is itself an expression of will, and just one of many. People's motivations are found more in the unconscious than in their conscious minds, and as a result human action is a product of blind urges which the conscious mind only later seeks to explain and justify. Shopenhauer's writings were very influential with intellectuals and scholars such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Richard Wagner, Jacob Burckhardt, Gerhart Hauptmann, and Thomas Mann.
