Product Description
Robert Adamson has been nourished for much of his life by Australia's Hawkesbury River. His poetry praises nature - red in tooth and claw - and celebrates existence as a mythological quest. "The Kingfisher's Soul" is his first new collection to be published in Britain since "Reading the River: Selected Poems" (2004). Extending the territory covered by the later poems in that selection, "The Kingfisher's Soul" takes Adamson's personal Romanticism and daring lyricism to a higher imaginative level. He confronts a range of contradictions: how the fish he kills to make a living also sustain his vision as poet; and how he uses birds from the sky for his paintings. He wonders about the existence of God as well as the different meanings of souls of humans, birds, fish and animals. Some of the poems look at war, and many come back again to love. ... Read more

Product Description
Shortly after the dawn of photography, the unlikely partnership between the respected painter David Octavius Hill and the young engineer Robert Adamson produced some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium. During their brief but prolific association (1843-1848), Hill and Adamsom experimented with some of the earliest calotype processes, creating hundreds of portraits, staged dramatic photographs, and architectural and landscape images. The Getty Museum holds more than four hundred of their works, forty-seven of which are featured in this latest addition to the popular In Focus series. This collection of remarkable images also includes commentary on the plates, a chronology of the artists partnership, and an edited transcript of a colloquium on the artists. ... At this price, you can't be without this lovely book. Every conceit of modern photography-except for color and stop-motion- is to be found in the pioneering work with a negative/positive process.
Retouching-which we can now see as merely a kind of image editing was almost suggested by the paper negative. This book is remarkable and eye-opening.
