1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!!!!
This book is a badly-OCR-ed version of the original book, including all the OCR mistakes (punctuation marks all over, missing letters). My guess is that someone got an online, non-text version of the original, maybe from Google Books, and ran OCR software on each page, printed it, and tried to sell it. It's essentially unreadable. ... Read more

It seems a lot of different editions of this book were published with varying tables of contents or I only have one book and not three. Not very practical and vaguely despriptive. However it has lots of information on astrology.

From a true scholar of the middle ages, revered by many in alchemy, his famous "De Occulta Philosophia" is depicted in this book.Agrippa combines magic, astrology, Qabbalah, theurgy, medicine, and the occult properties of plants. rocks, and metals to name a few.It is not hard to see, after reading this book, why Agrippa's work was such an important factor in the spread of medieval occult sciences.Absolutely Fascinating to read!

Product Description
This is an early 20th century edition of Agrippa's Philosophy of Natural Magic, along with a wealth of background material. Originally published in 1531-3, De occulta philosophia libri tres, (Three books of Occult Philosophy) proposed that magic existed, and it could be studied and used by devout Christians, as it was derived from God, not the Devil. Agrippa had a huge influence on Renaissance esoteric philosophers, particularly Giordano Bruno.

While this is not a specialist edition, it will suffice for the casual reader who doesn't want to wade through Elizabethan typography and spelling, just enough of which is preserved here for flavor. [..] This edition is a pastiche of a portion of a translation of Agrippas' libri tres by an unidentified translator, excerpts from a book on Agrippa by Henry Morley with extensive background, and some self-promotional material by the publisher, de Lawrence, who was a notorious pirate publisher. This end material is of interest because it is a good example of early 20th century American occult publishing. (Quote from sacred-texts.com)

About the Author

Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa von Nettesheim (September 14, 1486 - February 18, 1535) was a German magician, occult writer, astrologer, and alchemist.

Agrippa was born in Cologne in 1486. In 1512, he taught at the University of Dole in France, lecturing on Johann Reuchlin's De verbo mirifico; as a result, Agrippa was denounced, behind his back, as a "Judaizing heretic." Agrippa's vitriolic response many months later did not endear him to the University.

In 1510, he studied briefly with Johannes Trithemius, and Agrippa sent him an early draft of his masterpiece, De occulta philosophia libri tres, a kind of summa of early modern occult thought. Trithemius was g ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Foundation Book of Western Occultism
Any one with even a passing interest in the occult has heard of Agrippa's three books. It has rightfully been called THE sourcebook of western magic (or at least of the Renaissance rediscovery of the Art.). It is recorded that the magus Dr. John Dee always kept a copy open on his desk at Mortlake for ready reference. Even today many of us keep Agrippa's masterpiece out and ready- some for reference, others to merely impress.

The basic, uniting principle of this mammoth volume is the Soul of the World. This is the traditional Greek concept (Agrippa was clearly a Neo-Platonist) of an intermediary world-soul that mediates between the One and the material world. This is the basis of all natural magic. This is what interconnects all of Agrippa's vast system of astrology, numerology, alchemy, Kabala, seals, talismans, lists of correspondences, etc. Everything in the cosmos emanates downward from the highest Source. Moreover, hidden currents and vibrations interconnect the lower with the higher in sympathetic union.

As much as I value this classic book, if I wanted a single volume for practical use and reference I would probably choose _The Magician's Companion_ by Bill Whitcomb. However, I would still keep this book in my master collection with the rest of the great source works.

Contrary to rumor, there was no fourth book written by Agrippa- the one in circulation is a very old forgery. ... Read more

Product Description
This book is a milestone in Western magical practice. Often erroneously called a forgery, it is in fact six separate books in one, the first two being by Agrippa (1486–1535). One of them, Of Magical Ceremonies, is Agrippa’s clearest step-by-step formulation of how to perform an evocation, much more openly expressed than in his Three Books of Occult Philosophy. In addition there is the key grimoire, Of the Magick of the Ancients by Arbatel, which clearly defines the different types of magic, focusing on the invocation of angels and of the Olympic spirits. The Heptameron by Peter de Abano is a complete, self-contained set of instructions for conjuration of spirits according to the day of the week. Also included is Villinganus’ work on the nature of spirits, illusions, prophecies, and miracles, and how they may be used. Two complete geomancies (one by Agrippa) complete the volume, which has been reset in modern type and edited with a commentary by Stephen Skinner. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars it is what it is . . .
A good, essential, and important title for anyone who is serious about magic; though simply a book that is in its umpteenth incarnation. However, Stephen Skinner does add a good dose of his skill and experience as both a writer and more importantly a magician to the mix, which makes for a better issue, in terms of practicality and functionality, than it would be if someone else were in his place. Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars For serious old system magicians
The Heptameron contains the same information about the spirits and their offices. It is a must have book for those who are serious about their Work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cognizant and Comprehensive!
Eye-opening and fiercely compulsive reading if you are a student of the occult.Heavy on the astrological geomancy but overall it expanded my current parameters of what I thought I already knew about occult philosophy.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable but Incomplete Edition
This volume is a facsimile of Robert Turner's English translation (1654); the original volume first appeared (in Latin) in Marburg around 1554.The original volume included a large number of short texts of varying interest, but Turner (for unclear reasons) decided only to translate a few of them. This edition includes 6 short texts: Of Geomancy (H.C. Agrippa); Of Occult Philosophy the Fourth Book (pseudo-Agrippa); Heptameron or Magical Elements (pseudo-Peter de Abano); Isagoge: An Introductory Discourse on the Nature of ... Spirits... (Georg Pictorius Villinganus); Of Astronomical Geomancy (Gerard of Cremona); and the anonymous Arbatel of Magic.Only the Geomancy is actually by Agrippa, and it doesn't fit well with the other texts. The Fourth Book is, as another reviewer noted, certainly spurious; it purports to be Agrippa's "secret key" to the Occult Philosophy, of which he spoke in a letter to a friend. The Heptameron and the Arbatel are grimoires of some interest for those interested in black magic, as indeed is the Fourth Book itself; the Isagoge is a rather dull dialogue about spirits; and the Astronomical Geomancy is more or less impenetrable but perhaps interesting in a peculiar way. There have been a number of reprints of this volume, some now surprisingly valuable despite their modernity; all, however, have trimmed out one or more of the already few texts. As such, this is probably the best edition available. It is, like all Kessinger products, a cheaply-bound xerox facsimile of the original 17th-century text, but it's readable and includes everything. If you collect grimoires or magical texts, this is a very famous one, and you ought to have it; copies of the various Latin printings turn up with some regularity, and those with access to Latin would do better with those, although they are of course quite expensive. If you're looking for works by Agrippa, the Geomancy is all you'll find here, but it's interesting in a number of respects. If you want to know about Agrippa's ceremonial magic, however, you need to read book 3 of the Occult Philosophy, available in a nice Llewellyn edition.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Spurious16th Century Treatise on Magic
The Fourth Book of Occult Philosphy purports to be the work of Henry Agrippa, the 16th century author of "Three Books of Occult Philosophy".But the 4th Book was obviously not written by Agrippa and bears no resemblance to his style of writing.Although it can be traced back to the 16th century as it is mentioned by Agrippa's student, Johann Weyer in his "De Praestigiis Daemonum", the work remains of uncertain provencance.

In part a partial summary of some of Agrippa's writings, this facsimile of the English translation by the 17th century Cambridge scholar Robert Turner, comprises spurious essays on Geomancy and Magick under the name of Agrippa, The Heptameron of Peter of Abano, and books on Astrology and Demonolgy, concluding with the Arbatel, a largely Judeo-Christian outlook on the dangers of magic.

It is a very quick and easy read, despite the portions dealing with Geomancy and Astrology that even those serious about such subjects would find largely frustrating and incomprehensible.

The work largely remains of pure historical interest with not much of serious substance to an undertanding of Magic and Occult Philiosphy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Occult Book
This is an affordable copy of an occult classic which I am happy to have in my library. Agrippa was an astonishing occultist and I find the information contained both helpful and interesting.

In 1898, Willis F. Whitehead published a partial edition of Agrippa's great classic of Western occultism, Of Occult Philosophy or Magic. Whitehead based his edition on John French's English translation (Moule: London, 1651), and his main contribution was to partially modernize French's spelling and punctuation.Unfortunately his edition is disappointing for several reasons.First, he stopped after editing only the first of Agrippa's three books. Secondly, in his attempt to break up some of the enormous sentences, he occasionally lost some of the meaning. Thirdly, Whitehead obsessively mutilated the text by substituting euphemisms for sexual references or deleting them entirely. As an example, in chapter 15 of French's translation we read "take those members, or parts, in which the Venerall [venereal, i.e. sexual] appetite is most vigorous, such as the heart, testicles, matrix [womb], yard [penis], sperme, and menstrues." Whitehead changed this to read "...parts in which the vital vertue is most vigorous, such as the heart, breast, and also like parts."Apparently using Victorian standards, he likewise edits out terms like "dung," "gut," "abortion," and others. Another defect in this edition is that it is actually a reprint of the edition of L.W. DeLaurence, an infamous literary pirate who shamelessly took credit for Whitehead's efforts. In my opinion, much better editions of Agrippa are available, and worth the extra cost. ... Read more
