Product Description
In his Confessions, Saint Augustine reflects upon his life in the light of scripture and the presence of God. He begins with his infancy, pondering the many sins of his life before his conversion, and he confesses not only his sins but even more the greatness of God. This work presents a wonderful contrast between the Holy God who created all things and whom heaven and earth cannot contain, and a commonly sinful man who has joyfully received God's loving salvation and mercy.

Many scholars consider Saint Augustine to be among the greatest and most influential fathers of the early church. And as you read his Confessions, you will find the confident humility that is common among those whom Jesus calls "great in the kingdom of heaven." Augustine writes as a common man, and so his words span time and tradition. May his Confessions guide you to the One whom he confesses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Augustine in brief
The Fleming H. Revell Company put together four slim volumes of spiritual classics, one each for Augustine of Hippo, Soren Kierkegaard, Martin Luther, and Blaise Pascal.I'm not sure if they were intending to have further volumes available, but in any event, these four were published, and make an interesting little set of spiritual classics.

I say 'little set', for these books are small indeed. Each has 64 pages, and the book's footprint size is barely that of a large index card. These are pocket-books in a true sense of the word. They also offer a way of being introduced to masters of spiritual writing in a way that is brief, accessible and not intimidating.

In the introduction to the book on Augustine, Robert van de Weyer (who has published collections on things in many religious traditions, including Celtic spirituality, Islam, and a print of an early version of the Book of Common Prayer) states that Augustine may be the most influential Christian ever - both Catholics and Protestants base much of their theologies on Augustine (or react to his theology), and the Orthodox treat him as a venerated father of the church.

Van de Weyer gives a brief discussion of Augustine's life in large part derived from the classic work, Confessions. This includes Augustine's early rejection of scripture, his various times of bewilderment and confusion, and his eventual conversion.Van de Weyer draws more widely on Augustine's work to give pieces relating to doctrine and to spirituality, as well as some prayers, including the famous 'Come, Lord, set us on fire.'The book is decorated throughout with colour plates of images inspired by the writings.

This is far from a comprehensive book, and in no way a critical commentary. However, for brief kinds of reading, lectio divina and other kinds of inspirational or meditative reading with a bit of historical and theological content thrown in for good measure, this text on Augustine is a good volume to use, together with the other volumes in this series. It is a bit difficult to find, but worth it.

When Saint Augustine wrote his Confessions he was facing, and responding to, a growing spread of asceticism in the Roman world.

About the Author
St Augustine of Hippo, the great Doctor of the Latin Church, was born at Thagaste in North Africa, in A.D. 354. He was brought up as a Christian but he was soon converted to the Manichean religion. He also came under the influence of Neoplatonism. However, in 387 he renounced all his unorthodox beliefs and was baptised. His surviving works had a great influence on Christian theology and the psychology and political theology of the West. R.S. Pine-Coffin is a Roman Catholic and was born in 1917. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Both Historical and yet Relevant Today
Even though this book is out of print, if you research, read, and/or study Augustine and his thought, then you do not want to be without this text. John Leinenweber is a first rate translator.

The text includes letters from Augustine to students, the nuns of Hippo, Proba (a widow), Bishop Benenatus, Boniface (count of Africa), the Donatists Schimatics, etc. The letters include rebukes, theology, philosophical issues, concerns about movements or trends in the Christian Church, consultations, etc.

This text, if for no other reason, allows the reader to really pry into the mind of one of the greatest thinkers in the history of theology and philosophy. It allows us to see his concerns, his responses to others in crisis, in dealing with doctrinal issues and the like. The most intriguing thing, I think, about this text is the fact that these letters, even when read today still ring through with strong relevancy! I highly recommend this work! ... Read more

Product Description
"The reader who has never met Augus-tine before ought to go first of all to the Confessions," reflected the Trappist monk and scholar Thomas Merton. "Augustine lived the theology that he wrote. . . . He experienced the reality of Christ living in his own soul."
Saint Augustine, the celebrated theologian who served as Bishop of Hippo from a.d. 396 until his death in a.d. 430, is widely regarded as one of the most influential thinkers in the Western world. Written in the form of a long prayer addressed directly to God, Augustine's Confessions, the remarkable chronicle of his conversion to Christianity, endures as the greatest spiritual autobiography of all time.
"Augustine possessed a strong, capacious, argumentative mind," wrote Edward Gibbon. "He boldly sounded the dark abyss of grace, predestination, free-will, and original sin." And the eminent historian Jaroslav Pelikan remarked: "There has, quite literally, been no century of the sixteen centuries since the conversion of Augustine in which he has not been a major intellectual, spiri-
tual, and cultural force." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The Confessions of St. Augustine
Written in a way making understanding difficult. This could have been translated in a more interesting and reader friendly manner.Very disappointing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tai's QuickViews: Three Stars
St. Augustine is obsessed with sin (and Jesus). No wonder as he is the proponent of the concept of original sin. He goes through some lengths not only to prove God's existence, which religious people are constantly prone to do as one who were to have to constantly refute the fact that he is indeed Napoleon Bonapate- Augustine also performs philosophical acrobats to avoid toppling this house of cards called belief. What a feat indeed.
Somehow, God lies outside of everything, even the rules which we know everything.
The "Saint" verbally flogs himself at every turn; even to acts done as a child when he stole fruit for stealing sake or to when he took up with a woman in Milan?
There seems to me a misfiring (as Richard Dawkins calls it) in our brains that needs authority, a craving for a personification of gravity and other laws into one surrogate father.
He talks of God as if he literally KNEW the man, being, spirit, deity, etc. When the only evidence he has of this "knowing" is what was written in a book. If one knew of God based on his own experience, that is if one were to have identical experiences of a god who had NOT read this book and was unable to reap the fodder of scripture to the malleable faults of human imagination, then and only then would I give the 'word" some credence of truth. But this is not the case. Religion is simply a collaboration of sticky, albeit harmful, ideas.

He also expressed his disdain for astrology, ack!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Read
I have never read the Confessions of St. Agustine. In fact, I found it very difficult to follow both in English and in Spanish the two times I did actually try to read the book.

Since Agustin can easily be considered one of the greatest thinkers in all of Christianity and foundational for Western civilization, I think it to be important to have some understanding of this man.

This CD version of the book made this man come alive to me.It wasn't just hearing how God dealt with an individualbringing them from darkness tothe light of the Gospel that impressed me, but that did impress me greatly. The details of everyday life from that time period I also found to be fascinating.

So, if you have wanted to read Agustin's spiritual autobiography, but have had trouble understanding it, I highly recommend this audio version. It is beautifully read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Long Commuters!
I enjoyed this unabridge audio book. It's one thing to read the book, its another experience to listen to it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reader
Obviously, the Confessions of St. Augustine themselves need no review. However, potential buyers need to know that the reader for this particular recording is absolutely fantastic. I took the time to listen to other recordings before I decided which to buy, and this one is absolutely the best one. It is a pleasure to listen to! ... Read more
