Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Roger Bacon," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Roger Bacon in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Roger Bacon when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Roger Bacon, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: Alan Moore (born 18 November 1953) is an English writer known for work in comics, including the acclaimed comic book series Watchmen, V for Vendetta and From Hell. He wrote the novel Voice of the Fire, and performs "workings" (one-off performance art/spoken word pieces) with The Moon and Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels, some released on CD. As a comics writer, Moore applied literary sensibilities to the mainstream of the medium as well as including challenging subject matter and adult themes. He brings a wide range of influences to his work, such as William S. Burroughs, Thomas Pynchon, Robert Anton Wilson and Iain Sinclair, New Wave science fiction writers like Michael Moorcock and horror writers like Clive Barker. Influences within comics include Will Eisner, Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Kirby and Bryan Talbot. Moore was born in Northampton, England to brewery worker Ernest Moore and printer Sylvia Doreen. He lived in a poor working class area, and after passing the Eleven plus exam, attended Northampton Grammar School. In 1970, at the age of 17, he was expelled for dealing LSD, later describing himself as "one of the world's most inept LSD dealers". With his first wife Phyllis, he had two daughters, Amber and Leah. The couple had a mutual lover, Deborah. In time, Phyllis, Deborah, and the two children left Moore. On 12 May 2007, he married Melinda Gebbie, with whom he has worked on several comics. He currently lives ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=18932702 ... Read more

Read more

1920. Conquests by arms are trivial in their permanent effects compared with the conquests of mind over matter, In the world of thought, there are the sources of progress to be found, and it was a significant fact, and momentous in its significance, that men of learning in 1914 found it in their hearts to do homage for the first time to Roger Bacon. For long he suffered calumny and neglect; though unlike so many innovators in scientific speculation, it is true that he escaped torture and death at the hands of his contemporaries. He nevertheless suffered much persecution, as well shall learn in what follows. Contents: molding of Roger Bacon's mind; fruits of Roger Bacon's learning; astrology; alchemy; medicine; magic and the discovery of gunpowder. ... Read more

Product Description
The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.
