4-0 out of 5 stars Science, Meaning & Evolution
It is moving to witness the encounter of a sophisticated and cosmopolitan physicist with a man from the opposite end of the modern age: blunt, unschooled, and untraveled except on inward paths. Especially impressive is Nicolescu's humility in the face of the shoemaker's revelations, That it might fall to the destiny of Boehme's work to break the imaginal and moral impasse of modern science borders on the incredible. Yet within these pages, the inconceivable has actually taken place.-- From the Foreward by Joscelyn Godwin ... Read more

Product Description
Mystics of the Renaissance INTRODUCTION There are certain magical formulae which operate throughout the centuries of Man's mental history in ever new ways. In Greece one such formula was regarded as an oracle of Apollo. It runs: "Know Thyself." Such sentences seem to conceal within them an unending life. One comes upon them when following the most diverse roads in mental life. The further one advances, the more one penetrates into the knowledge of things, the deeper appears the significance of these formulae. In many a moment of our brooding and thinking, they flash

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Important
Jacob Boehme was one of the most important thinkers and mystics who ever lived. Unfortunately, being a genius and highly original, he wrote in a sometimes obscure and difficult style, and this was almost four centuries ago. If you think a mystic is a life-denying, impractical person with his head in the clouds you need to read this book. Professor Howard Brinton has written a clear, fascinating explanation of Boeme's thinking, which later had a major influence on German philosophy and many great writers and thinkers. Since I have been interested in New Thought for decades ("The Secret" and the law of attraction books borrow from New Thought often without giving credit and throwing out the Christianity) I was fascinated to see that Boehme dovetails into this type of thinking. If you have ever been interested in Religious Science or Unity you will be interested in this book. Boehme's is a living, vital Christianity not the dead Christianity and spiritually dead Christians we too often have today. And for an easy introduction to Boeme's writing findthe little book called "The Confessions of Jacob Boehme." ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good source of Boehme quotes, Hartmann's case dismissed
This popular book on Boehme catches some of his major thoughts, taken from selections of his works, and translates them to as "plain speech" as possible for the day. Although the boehmeian concept of repentance is given some justice here, I would seldom, if ever, agree with the theosophical/hindu/buddhist perspective of Hartmann, which repeatedly nags about the "inner life of man", and that man is by nature divine, not separated from divinity (something which Boehme did not believe). All in theosophical tradition, whose mindset is present in almost each and every comment of Hartmann. Though his position may be said to be drawn partially from some of Boehme's thinking (where there be influences from rosicrucianism?), it is given overemphasized attention to the point of hammering home Hartmann's own ideas rather than expounding well on Boehme's not-so-easily-understood view of man. Also, Boehme's thoughts on regeneration are interpreted in this eastern (basically reincarnationist) view of Hartmann, even though Boehme was influenced by lutheran pietism in that regard. The major benefit of this work is still the good selection of quotes from Boehme's own works, which is worth five stars. In the negative are the bulk of irrelevant and biased commentaries by Hartmann, which I give 1-2 stars. Thus three stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent BUT
This is one of the better overall books on presenting Boehme's works.
Not as good as "Jacob Boehme" His life and thought by John Joseph Stoudt.

I wanted to give it five stars but every time Boehme would give an undeniable "Christian" statement - the author would find some way to explain it away - usually by replacing it with some Buddhist belief.

Example: Page 234 - soft cover - Quoting Boehme "NO OTHER WOMAN ever since the time of Adam, became clothed with the celestial virgin except Mary ...."
Author's Footnote to the next paragraph:
* Similar circumstances are said to have been connected with Queen Maya, when she conceived oftheSpiritthatbecameincarnatedas GautamaBuddha.
Wasn't he aware of what he had just quoted Boehme as saying?

From "Jacob Boehme" by Stoutd- Page 289:
"By forgiveness and reconciliation Christ restored man's original unity. The new man is also androgynous, neither marrying nor giving in marriage. He enters a real kingdom, with a new spiritual body, to sit down to a banquet of sacramental food - Christ's new body and blood. All his horrible memories have been removed. Nakedness and anxiety are gone. The "turba" has been removed. Profane love has been changed into holy love (Bedenk. Stie f . 325) and wedded people now love spiritually. This is a far cry, indeed, from the oriental dream of NIRVANA."

You'll find the stumbling block is always the inability of an author to say {from a position of knowing} "JESUS Christ is Lord". They can use the term Christ but are very uncomfortable with the name JESUS. They can talk of "the body of Christ" but do not like "of which JESUS is the head". I don't know what they do with "Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that JESUS Christ is Lord".

Other examples:
Page 205; Footnote - The author rightly states that the indwelling Christ is what really determines what a true Christian is - but feels it necessary to question whether a JESUS of Nazareth really existed.
Page 208; As a footnote to Boehme's stating that "JESUS as the love of God" - Hartmann says "Jesus means wisdom"

On the other hand - Boehme had no problem with His name or His Lordship - and used it
extensively throughout his many writings.

Though I was disappointed by the heavy Buddhist leaning of many of the authors comments and footnotes - I must admit I was blessed by many of the ones that didn't inject those beliefs.

Overall - I would recommend this book if you can "eat the chicken and spit out the bones".

5-0 out of 5 stars clarity of Jacob Boehme
I could not believe how clear the very difficult thoughts and teachings of Jacob Boehme are in this book which is a reprint of a 1919 printing. As for me, these teachings are the greatest human thought ever put forth by any living person before death. I could not always grasp these concepts because of the difficulty in translation and the fact that Jacob Boehme by his own confession was not a brilliant man. I have had similar dreams and visions so it was not a hard process to flow with his revelations, but this book has become my most valuable possession, there is no book I know of that explains the process of the birth of Jesus in the soul, what regeneration really is and how a seeking soul may come into a vital union with God. I have all the works of Jacob Boehem in different bindings and forms but this book is a compendium of it all and I stumbled upon it quite by accident and quickly bought the only other copy I found on line. ...
