Product Description
This book contains a detailed study of the historical andsystematical origin of Edmund Husserl's views on meaning as manifestedin his most influential Logical Investigations (1900--01)and Ideas (1913), relating them both to Bernard Bolzano's theoryof the relationship between logical experiences and their objectivecontents (from his 1837 Theory of Science) and to HermannLotze's theory of ideas (from his 1874 Logic). The authorclarifies the basic concepts of Husserl's theory of meaning and showsthat it is Platonic (rather than Aristotelian) in spirit. Furthermore,he defends an `identificationalistic' interpretation of Husserl'scentral notion of `noematic X' and outlines a Husserlian contributionto the `externalism/internalism' debate in recent analytic philosophy.Primary audience: Philosophers of language, mind and logic witheither a phenomenological or an analytic background, Husserl scholars, historians of nineteenth and twentieth century philosophy. ... Product Description
Bernard Bolzano (1781-1848, Prague) was an outstanding thinker and reformer, far ahead of his times in many areas, including philosophy, ethics, politics, logic, theology and physics, and mathematics. Aimed at historians of mathematics, philosophy, ethics and logic, this volume contains the first English translations of some of his most significant mathematical writings, which contain the details of many celebrated insights and anticipations: clear topological definitions of various geometric extensions, an effective statement and use of the Cauchy convergence before it appears in Cauchy's work, remarkable results on measurable numbers (a version of real numbers), on functions (the construction of a continuous, non-differentiable function around 1830) and on infinite collections. ... Read more

Excerpt: Bernhard Placidus Johann Nepomuk Bolzano (October 5, 1781) December 18, 1848), Bernard Bolzano in English, was a Bohemian mathematician, logician, philosopher, theologian, Catholic priest and antimilitarist of German mother tongue. Bolzano was the son of two pious Catholics. His father, Bernard Pompeius Bolzano, was born in northern Italy and moved to Prague, where he married Maria Cecilia Maurer, the (German-speaking) daughter of a Prague merchant. Only two of their twelve children lived to adulthood. Bolzano entered the University of Prague in 1796 and studied mathematics, philosophy and physics. Starting in 1800, he also began studying theology, becoming a Catholic priest in 1804. He was appointed to the then newly created chair of philosophy of religion in 1805. He proved to be a popular lecturer not just in religion but also in philosophy, and was elected head of the philosophy department in 1818. Bolzano alienated many faculty and church leaders with his teachings of the social waste of militarism and the needlessness of war. He urged a total reform of the educational, social, and eco...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=302185 ... Read more

Read more

Excerpt: Gustav Mahler (7 July 1860 18 May 1911) was an Austrian late-Romantic composer, and one of the leading conductors of his generation. As a composer he acted as a bridge between the 19th century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. While in his lifetime his status as a conductor was established beyond question, his own music gained wide popularity only after periods of relative neglect which included a ban on its performance in much of Europe during the Nazi era. After 1945 the music was discovered and championed by a new generation of listeners; Mahler then became one of the most frequently performed and recorded of all composers, a position he has sustained into the 21st century. Born in humble circumstances, Mahler showed his musical gifts at an early age. After graduating from the Vienna Conservatory in 1878, he held a succession of conducting posts of rising importance in the opera houses of Europe, culminating in his appo...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=65174 ...
