Product Description

Bernard Bosanquet (1848?1923) was one of the leading figures of the idealist movement in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and in his obituary in the London Times, was described as having been ?the central figure of British philosophy for an entire generation.?

Bosanquet?s views fell out of favour in the decades after his death, but recently there has been a lively renewal of interest in European and British Idealism, the Idealist approach being recognized as providing valuable insights for contemporary debates in political philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, epistemology, and logic. Idealism also serves as a bridge between the dominant philosophical traditions of twentieth century Anglo-American and continental thought, and, indeed, Bosanquet was among the first British philosophers to address the work of Benedetto Croce, Giovanni Gentile, and Edmund Husserl and to introduce these thinkers to an English-language audience.

In Bernard Bosanquet and the Legacy of British Idealism, William Sweet and other leading scholars examine Bosanquet?s contribution to some of philosophy?s central questions. They provide a solid introduction to British Idealism and the idealist movement as a whole, and bring the scholarship on Bosanquet fully up-to-date.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Unemployment, poverty and role of the state were themes which structured the discourse of social theory and the developing social legislation in Britain at the end of the Victorian period and the early twentieth century. This collection examines the neglected contribution of Bernard and Helen Bosanquet to that contemporary maelstrom of ideas about the condition of the people, the process of social reform and the practice of social work. Like their contemporaries Sidney and Beatrice Webb, the Bosanquets were a significant partnership integrating philosophy and practice, theory and action. Bernard Bosanquet, the Idealist philosopher, is best known for his study The Philosophical Theory of the State. His wife Helen, economist and social worker, was a member of the Royal Commission on the Poor Laws (1905-9) and between 1909 and 1921 editor of the Charity Organisation Review. Themselves selective supporters of state welfare schemes, they helped to refashion the Charity Organisation Society away from its nineteenth century individualism by their advocacy of organic social collectivism. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Where is Part II ?
It appears that the Kessinger Publishing version includes Part One ONLY - Don't expect to get BOTH volumes, unless KP expects to publish Part Two in the near future (?).

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic development of Idealist logic.
In this massive two-volume work, Bernard Bosanquet offers what is arguablythe most complete development of Idealist logic ever set topaper.

Idealist logic has fallen out of fashion, though perhaps withlittle excuse. More or less "analytic" philosophers becomeexercised every now and then over the ontological status of propositions;perhaps they should remind themselves of an earlier tradition that beganinstead with the _judgment_ and never allowed the divorce between mind andreality which seemed to confer independent existence on the wraithlikeentities with which propositional logic deals.

For Bosanquet, as for theIdealists generally, there is not "knowledge" over here, on theone hand, and the reality it is "about" over there, on the other. As he puts it later (in _Implication and Linear Inference_), knowledge just_is_ reality itself _qua_ known, and that same reality is in some manner"constituting and maintaining itself in the form of truth" in thevery process of becoming and being known.

The knowledge of which logic isthe reflective analysis, as H.H. Joachim develops this view in _LogicalStudies_, is not something "in" the mind, on the one hand, andopposed to the reality it is "about," on the other; there is just"knowledge-or-truth" in some process of self-fulfillment orself-development, which simply _is_ reality manifesting itself; reality maybe more than this self-development, but it is not less. And it is _this_logic -- not abstract formal logic but the logic of reality's own"self-development" -- which Bosanquet discusses at length in thisclassic work.

Undoubtedly this way of putting things will sound strangeto modern readers, at least those who have not steeped themselves in theIdealist tradition. But in its way this approach to logic seems strangelyand naively correct; is there really a difference between reality "initself" and reality "as we understand it"? Granted that thelatter is always incomplete, but is it really of a different _character_from reality altogether? If so, how do we come to "know" anythingat all?

At the very least, Idealist logic deserves a second look in viewof the paradoxes to which formal "propositional" logic leads. Andthere is no better place to start than this great work, now all butforgotten.

Warning: Bosanquet is not the clearest writer ever born. Itwill be helpful to have a copy of -- say -- H.H. Joachim's aforementioned_Logical Studies_ at hand in order to work out what in the world Bosanquetis talking about.

Another helpful source is Brand Blanshard's _The Natureof Thought_, which in many respects advances the Idealist argument intogenuinely new territory. Blanshard later modified (indeed, all butabandoned) his view that an idea just _is_ its object _in posse_ and would,if developed, simply become identical with its object. But whether heshould have abandoned that view or not (I personally suspect not), hisdevelopment of it in _The Nature of Thought_ will be helpful to the readerwho wants to get a handle on Bosanquet. ...
