Product Description
Franz Brentano (1838-1917) led an intellectual revolution that sought to revitalize German-language philosophy and to reverse its post-Kantian direction. This volume brings together newly commissioned chapters on his important work in theory of judgement, reform of syllogistic logic, theory of intentionality, empirical descriptive psychology and phenomenology, theory of knowledge, metaphysics and ontology, value theory, and natural theology. It also offers a critical evaluation of Brentano's significance in his historical context, and of his impact on contemporary philosophy in both the analytic and the continental traditions. ... Product Description
Franz Brentano's classic study Psychology from an Empirical Standpoint was the most important of Brentano's works to be published in his lifetime.Unlike the first English translation in 1974, this edition simply contains the text corresponding to Brentano's original 1874 edition. A new introduction by Peter Simons places Brentano's work in the context of current philosophical thought, and is able to show how Brentano has emerged since the Seventies as a key figure in both contemporary European and Anglo-American traditions and crucial to any understanding the history of philosophy and psychology. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Intensional Inexistance
Two key word objects: Intentional Inexistence, and Inner perception...

I found this book useful as an empiricist/constructivist. I had not meditated on the thought of thought as a form of perception, maybe I missed out on the concept when I read Locke and Hume a few years ago, maybe i just didn't split that hair. Either way I find that thought as a form of perception/intuition is interesting along with presentation and judgment. Also this book is important in that it is one of the early works that specifically mention intentionality as a key part of the human. He may have even been the first to formulate intentionality. This is an important work, especially if you read or want to read Edmund Husserl.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you want to get smart in phenomenology, starts from this book
If you want to see the beginning of the phenomenological movement you should read this book. In this book is where Brentano re takes the concept of intentional content of the consciousness, that Aristotle, and scholastics used before, and in a way prepare the way to Husserl for his logical investigations (specially Investigation 5 - 6). ... Product Description
Franz Brentano (1838-1917) is a key figure in the development of Twentieth Century thought. It was his work that set Husserl on to the road of phenomenology and intentionality, that inspired Meinong's theory of the object which influenced Bertrand Russell, and the entire Polish school of philosophy.
^Descriptive Psychology presents a series of lectures given by Brentano in 1887; they were the culmination of his work, and the clearest statement of his mature thought. It was this later period which proved to be so important in the work of his student, Husserl.
This is the first English translation of his work. Benito Muller has added a concise introduction which places Brentano within the history of philosophy and psychology, and locates his influence in contemporary thought. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Short primer on an often-underrated philosopher
This book is an excellent introduction to the work of Franz Brentano, a founding phenomenologist who served as inspiration for Husserl, and later Heidegger. The book provides a short sketch of his life, and chapters on the basic aspects of his philosophy (starting with "scientific psychology" and progressing to metaphysics and theology).Finding English-language work on Brentano is somewhat difficult, so this book is already a rare find -- but more so because it is well-written, informative, and highly readable.

Beginners at Brentano should know that the book does assume familiarity with some concepts (e.g., Aristotlianism, phenomenology, etc), as well as some major philosophers who influenced Brentano. The writing is rather dense, but not as dense as most serious philosophy books. The topical project of this book is the broad "For Dummies" type introduction to Brentano, but it is written at a much higher level.

Overall, this is a short, and extremely educational introduction to the thought that inspired Heidegger and others. It does not go into great depth, nor is it very easy reading, so it's probably best for someone with a moderate amount of knowledge in this field -- it may be too basic for experts, and too difficult for novices. ... Product Description
When Franz Brentano introduced the concept of intentionality into modern philosophy, he initiated a revolution in philosophical thinking whose effects are still being felt - not least in contemporary developments in the field of cognitive science. Barry Smith's Austrian Philosophy: The Legacy of Franz Brentano is the first extensive study of the philosophy of the Brentano school. The Brentanian philosophy is oriented towards the problem of mental directedness, of how mind relates to objects. Thus in working out their 'theories of objects', the Brentanian philosophers - in contrast to Frege and his successors in the analytic movement - did not abandon psychological concerns in favor of an orientation towards language. Rather, their investigations in ontology proceeded always in tandem with work on the cognitive processes in which objects are experienced. In thus spanning the gulf between psychology and ontology, the Brentano school gave rise to movements of thought such as phenomenology and Gestalt psychology (the term 'Gestalt' was introduced as a technical term of philosophy by Brentano's student Ehrenfels). The Brentanists enjoyed close relations with Carl Menger and other early members of the Austrian school of economics and Austrian Philosophy contains a detailed study of the interconnections between their work on the general theory of value and subjective theories of value developed in the economic sphere. Brentano's student Kasimir Twardowski initiated the rich tradition of scientifically and logically oriented philosophy in Poland, and the role of Brentanianism in Polish philosophy, and especially in the development of Lesniewski's mereology, is here for the first time subjectedto extended historical treatment. Another Brentano student, Carl Stumpf, was responsible for introducing into philosophy the technical term 'Sachverhalt' or 'state of affairs', and the associated doctrine of realism in logic, too, is shown to have been a special preserve ... Based on a lecture given before the Vienna Law Society in 1889, this title had an extraordinary influence in the field of philosophy. It provided the basis for the theory of value as this was developed by Meinong, Husserl and Scheler. In addition, the doctrine of intentionality that is presented here is central to contemporary philosophy of mind. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars refreshing common-sense, lacking methodology
Brentano is principally known for the concept of Intentionality that he pioneered, and that is now a prominent issue within the philosophy of the mind (considered a sub-division with an affinity both to metaphysics and philosophy of language). In this book, however, he attempts to give an account of morals. He analyzes mental activities in depth and searches for a source of certainty in moral judgements, as did many before him (the books dates from 1889). He criticizes Kant, adopts and tries to improve on Descartes, and relies on Aristotle. To sum up, the good is what we rightly love, the bad - what we rightly hate. How do we know what is 'rightly' here ? by distinguishing between instinctive, blind mental impulse and wise, higher vision. And how we do that ? well, by virtue of intuitive evidence of the natural light... yes, the same principal Descartes used. Why read it then ? because Brentano makes some fine observations about the activities of the mind; because dealing with his arguments may spur your own understanding; and because he is an important figure in philosophy, historically. Of course, philosophy never completely solved a cardinal problem, and Brentano is no exception. The important thing is what you go through when facing the problems of morality, among others. Don't skip the appendices. ... Read more
