Book Description

Published in 1790, two years before the start of the Terror, this work offered a remarkably prescient view of the chaos that lay ahead. A classic of political science and a cornerstone of modern conservative thought, it articulates a defense of property, religion, and traditional values that resonates with modern readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The masterpiece ofmodern conservatism
I cannot believe that noone hasreviewed this.Burke wrote this incredibly farsighted dissection ofthe French Revolution at a point when most English opinion leaders were supportive of that great orgy of sadistic bloodletting. He wrote this in1790 as a reply to a clergyman who was ofcourse a big supporter of the Revolution. Burke dissects the reverend and wasable to foresee the emergence ofa dictator well before the Reign of Terror andRobespierre and of course before anyone had heard ofNapoleon. It includes many memorable phrases such as " the ageof chivalry isdead; the age ofsophists and calculators has begun."Othermemorablephrases living until our times include " the unbought grace of life." Burke is probably the unsurpassedpolitical genius of the last two hundred years. By all means if you want to know the essence of conservatismas prudent reform vs the awful beast ofmillenarian utopian leftism, this is where you muststart. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Big ad for Endurox R4 - he is the inventor!
This book is just an big ad for the Endurox R4 supplement. It's an "scientific-like", but all in all, it's just an comercial super-panphlet for the dietary supplement created by the author!

Ok, there are some nice things about the book: it shows you how to hydrate, to use the carbohidrate window after exercise, that some protein mixed with carbos will make you better. But it keeps telling about the R4 and it's magical properties. In fact, most of the book is useful, BUT the book is TOTALLY BIASED. In fact, studies shows that the precise quantities of substancies this book are not that precise. In example: he says that you should use an 1:4 carbo/protein ratio, when you can have almost the same or better effects with an 1:5 or 1:3 ratio. The ciwuja magical element has not been proven to be effective. In fact, most ciwuja supplements are in reality forbidden substancies, not the natural plant extract.

There are other books that exploit this subject with more precise information, not comercially-oriented. When I raced with professional cyclists in Europe, they tended not to use comercial supplements because of the risks of contamination with forbidden substancies. They just ate plain bread-with-jelly sandwichs and drank a lot of coke.

It's no wonder why the author died: he sold his soul to the devil by writing this pesky book and sell more of HIS supplement!

5-0 out of 5 stars All athletes should read it
This book takes a scienteific approach in explaining how muscles work and more importantly, how workouts/trainings can be improved by providing the necessary nutrition at the right times. The recommended nutritional supplements almost totally eliminated the after-workout muscle pain. Not considering the information that the book offers, workouts/training can be a waste of both time and energy.
In addition to the basic idea of how to treat our muscles, the book can also serve as a reference as it gives detailed explanation about several minerals and vitamins.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not great
I thought that this was an interesting and informative book, but a large portion of it seems to be an advertisement for Accelerade and Endurox R4 sports drinks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sound research; easy to read
This is a well written book that is useful regardless of your sport or fitness interest. The author distills the latest research and clearly explains how to manage your nutrition for optimal muscle recovery. The book also gives clear explanations of such procedures as carbohydrate loading, and explains a variety of metabolic issues. It is incredibly useful, and a must for any athlete or fitness enthusiast! I found it impossible to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on training I own...
...and I own ALOT of books on training. I got this book specifically for muscle recovery after running, but it turned out to be alot more.Nutrition for training, helping you understand how the physiology works during & after exercise, what EXACTLY to do during & after for optimal fueling & recovery.I hike, run, mountain bike, and I'm starting adventure racing. The information in this book has helped ALL my activities, and I highly recommend it.I thought I was going to get a "1+2=3" type of formula for muscle recovery and that's it...but the book actually provides much more.I'm buying it for my adventure racing team members. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Biography based on the nature of ambivalence
For a political biography, THE RAGE OF EDMUND BURKE/ PORTRAIT OF AN AMBIVALENT CONSERVATIVE by Isaac Kramnick goes a long way into the psychology of social breakdown.Burke is remembered mainly as a conservative, old enough at the time of the French revolution to be appalled that anyone thought an attack which left the queen's bedchambers in Versailles full of mayhem and dead bodies could advance civilization. The revolutionary freedom which America is currently attempting to bring to foreign portions of the world by demonstrating air superiority might be considered as deranged as the situations examined in this book, which was published in 1977, when hardly anyone had reason to suppose that the form of freedom offered by American military conquest was similar to the acts of Medea conjured by Edmund Burke into a description of the nature of rebellion in his REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE, quoted in this book as an instance in which "Burke might well have sensed the relationship between his own radical streak and his enduring hatred towards his father.Guiltily, however, he recoiled from the bloody horror and emphasized the loving and caring son.The good subject, he insisted,

should approach to the faults of the State as to the wounds of a father, with pious awe and trembling solicitude.By this wise prejudice we are taught to look with horror on those children of their country who are prompt rashly to hack that aged parent in pieces and put him into the kettle of magicians, in hopes that by their poisonous weeds and wild incantations they may regenerate the paternal constitution and renovate their father's life."(p. 64).

Other major figures mentioned in this book include Bedford, James Boswell, Charles James Fox, Warren Hastings, Tom Paine, Joseph Priestley, Rockingham, Jean Jacques Rousseau, Richard Shackleton, and Mary Wollstonecraft. The beginning of the book emphasizes the role that religious dissenters in England played "in scientific and political innovation."(p. 13).Joseph Priestly, "founder of the modern Unitarian movement," (p. 13) opposed the "Poor Laws, which for the bourgeoisie were one of the most onerous of the old order's interferences with economic liberty."(p. 14).In those exciting times, a mob "burned his laboratory and home in 1791, sending him to finish his days in dissenter's paradise--America."(p. 13).

Freud is mentioned well a few times in this book, showing that it is possible to take a modern view of times that were shaking the foundation of everything that was not America.People who are used to the pampered civilized existence which Americans of today expect others to worship even as they experience extreme forms of chaos might learn a few things that provide a better perspective for understanding Freud than the middle class version of conservatism provides. This book is interesting, if you can stick with it. ... In their distinctive ways, Ms. Himmelfarb argues, they exemplify what Burke two centuries ago and Trilling most recently have called the moral imagination. ... Read more

G. Himmelfarb has some very different insights into the authors she discusses and puts some of the characters in the novels in new lights.I have enjoyed reading this book and she has prodded me into reading further in the authors discussed.I would recommend this book to any persons interested in changing the 'moral tone' of American today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Links intellectual lives to the moral imagination
Gertrude Himmelfarb's THE MORAL IMAGINATION is a recommended pick, here linking the intellectual lives of modern thinker and literary giants with what she identifies as the 'moral imagination'. How these thinkers evolved their ideas, wrote in different traditions at different times, and shared a common moral passion which reflected in their literature makes for truly involving reading.

Book Description
Burke's influential early writings on aesthetic are intimately connected to his political concerns according to this study of his engagement with Irish politics and culture. The heart of his aesthetic addressed itself to the experience of terror, a spectre that haunts Burke's political imagination throughout his career. Burke's preoccupation with violence, sympathy and pain actually allowed him to explore the dark side of the Enlightenment. This major reassessment of a key political and cultural figure appeals to Irish studies specialists, political theorists and Romanticists. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description

The French Revolution is a defining moment in world history, and usually it has been first approached by English-speaking readers through the picture painted of it by Edmund Burke. Reflections on the Revolution in France is a classic work in a range of fields from history through political science to literature, and securely holds its place among the canon of “great books.” Yet its meaning is still contested and often misunderstood, equally by those who wish to admire or to denigrate Burke for his present-day relevance. This edition aims to locate Burke once again in his contemporary political and intellectual setting. Alone among recent versions, it reprints the text of the first edition of the Reflections, and shows how Burke amended it as his knowledge of the Revolution deepened. It is certain to become the standard edition for scholars and students alike.

The editor’s Introduction is much more extensive than that of any previous edition. It situates the Reflections in Burke’s life and the development of his ideas, the history of English political thought, the debate about the French Revolution, and the debate the book itself inspired. But the Introduction is more than a compendium of information; it is a thoughtful, coherent interpretation of Burke and his book. The editor’s notes are also fuller than those of any previous edition, glossing many literary and biblical allusions missed by previous editors. He also supplies an extended note on the text, a biographical guide, and a bibliography, helpfully presented in discursive form.

1-0 out of 5 stars Could have been written by a Thermidorian pamphleteer
Burke's "Reflections on the Revolution in France" is analysis lacking in accuracy and originality by an enemy of democracy which should not be read without careful consideration of the author's motives and a thorough fore-knowledge of the French Revolution. Do yourself a favor and read some worthwhile reflections.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Revised Oxford Edition It Ain't
Don't buy this book! The Revised Oxford Edition of this classic book has it all:Insightful introduction, properly translated quotations, fine notes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Text is Great, Intro by L.G.Mitchell is better
Can't improve on the text of REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE.He was the dominant political thinker of the last quarter of the 18th century in ENgland. His reputation depends less on his role as a practising politician than on his ability to set contemporary problems within a wider context of political theory. The introduction by L.G. Mitchell argues this point congently. Mitchell's intro appears in the Oxford University Press edition. It's cheaper, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reflections on the Revolution in France: (Penguin Classics)
Reflections on the Revolution in France written by Edmund Burke and Edited with an introduction by Conor Cruise O'Brien the Penguin Classics version is the best version of this unparalleled powerful work. The reason for this is that included in this version you have an introduction that gets the reader upto speed. For Burke is without doubt the foremost conservative British political thinkers of his time, (1729-1797).

There is a biographical note on Edmund Burke right after the introduction giving the reader a historical perspective into who is Edmund Burke and why his advice was sought after with regard to the French Revolution and the consequenses of its following.Unlike the United States, France had an established entrenched government, so any change in form of government meant that an upheavel of property, religion, and traditional French institutions would have to occur.Underlying the French Revolution was the latent Catholic Cause which being Irish Burke had a good deal of sympathy.

Burke's Reflections written in 1790 was a really good prediction of the events pretaining to the Reign of Terror experienced by the French. This edition of Edmund Burke's "Reflection on the Revolution in France" has well explained footnotes further giving the reader a much greater appreciation for the practical wisdom of Burke.Burke was a man who would've rather seen a gradual or piecemeal reform as opposed to a revolution as he was sceptical in his belief in expediency.

Another plus for this edition, in contrast to the others available, is that there is a well appointed "Notes" at the end of Burke's writing. Also, at the very end of this book you'll have a recommended reading list, which for those inclined is indispensable.By far this edition is well worth reading and great care has been given to bring this important work in a form that is easily understandable, with enough detail to make it interesting reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The Wild Gas" ... let loose...
I personally find, overall, that other persons writing
about and analyzing Burke and his views tend to be a bit
more interesting and compelling, than Burke himself in
his prose.
I do not consider myself a "conservative" -- in the
sense that that is a political agenda or mindset, nor
a reactionary. There is much in academics and political
philosophy which tends to want to damn by labels -- and
by putting ideas into boxes, filing, and forgetting...rather
than listening to, or thoughtfully considering.
One can believe in classic values, and find his
grounding in classical philosophy without being a
rigid reactionary or even a doctrinaire conservative.
So, when Burke speaks with the speech of the
Ancients and espouses classical warnings and
remonstrances about the necessity of restraint
and careful consideration, one can agree with him.
And, as the editor and author of the "Introduction"
to the Penguin Classics edition, Conor Cruise O'Brien,
points out, there is that of the prophet in Burke as
well, since he published these REFLECTIONS in 1790,
before the Reign of Terror in 1793, yet he correctly
foresees the excesses to which the French Revolution
will proceed in its unchecked course.
One of the best quotes which I like very much from
this work follows:
"When I see the spirit of liberty in action, I see
a strong principle at work; and this, for a while,
is all I can possibly know of it.The wild GAS, the
fixed air is plainly broke loose: but we ought to
suspend our judgment until the first effervescence is
a little subsided, till the liquor is cleared, and
until we see something deeper than the agitation of
a troubled and frothy surface.I must be tolerably
sure, before I venture publicly to congratulate men
upon a blessing, that they have really received one.
Flattery corrupts both the receiver and the giver;
and adulation is not of more service to the people
than to kings.I should therefore suspend my
congratulations on the new liberty of France, until
I was informed how it had been combined with
government; with public force; with the discipline
and obedience of armies; with the collection of an
effective and well-distributed revenue; with morality
and religion; with the solidity of property; with
peace and order: with civil and social MANNERS. All
these (in their way) are good things too; and, without
them, liberty is not a benefit whilst it lasts, and
is not likely to continue long." ... Read more

Book Description
This anthology brings together Burke's most important speeches, letters and pamphlets -reprinted uncut (with one exception), with substantial headnotes and introduction by Bromwich. The collection purposefully does not include Burke's two most widely read works. Taken as a whole, the collection demonstrates the depth of Burke's humanitarian concern, and presents Burke as forerunner to a tradition of liberal political thought that includes Tocqueville and Mill, rather than stressing his role as a founder of Anglo-American conservatism, as he has been widely understood. ...
