Product Description
On the Nature and Conduct of the Passions is awork dealing with the bases of morality and virtue, both public andprivate. Hutcheson argues that the natural inclination of the humanbeing is to be virtuous, since the pleasures of being virtuous are thegreatest we can experience. Individual human beings have a commoninbuilt morality because of the human constitution. In addition to thefive senses (sight, smell etc) he believed there was a "moral sense,"both equal and complementary to these five. The picture he paints isof a human mentality positively geared to harmonious society, whichstumbles and fails only when selfish interest gets in the way. Selfishinterest though, was for him only a secondary phenomenon, a failure ofthe system, which can be corrected if only people could be brought torealize their own nature and the nature of their senses.

This edition has been fully modernized (antiquated graphemes replacedwith standard modern characters). The book has a new introduction andnotes by Andrew Ward. Mr. Ward is Senior Lecturer in Aesthetics,Ethics and Kant's philosophy at the University of York. All Latin andGreek extracts have been glossed by Fiona Forsyth and her colleaguesat Manchester Grammar School. ... Read more

Product Description

The writings of Francis Hutcheson played a central role in the development of British moral philosophy in the eighteenth century. His Illustrations on the Moral Sense is significant not only historically but also for its exploration of problems of concern in contemporary ethics. Yet except for brief selections it has not appeared in print since the eighteenth century.

Independent moral philosophy began in England with Hobbes and the reactions to his views, in which two divergent strains were implicit: one a rationalistic appeal to eternal and immutable essences and the other an empirical appeal to human affections and desires. Hutcheson countered Hobbes' theory, which was based on self interest, with a theory based on the moral sense and made explicit the opposition between the school of reason and the school of sentiment. His treatment of these and other issues set British moral philosophy on a line of development that has continued to the present.

This edition of Illustrations on the Moral Sense again makes available Hutcheson's contributions to normative ethics and metaethics, thus making possible a more accurate evaluation of his significance in the history of ethics. His epistemology of morals and his theory of justification are critically examined in a substantial introduction by the editor, Bernard Peach. In addition, Hutcheson's correspondence with Gilbert Burnet, the Younger, which is central to an understanding of the controversies in British moral philosophy in the eighteenth century, is made accessible here for the first time since 1735 in an extensive appendix.

Product Description
Daniela Gobetti combines political theory with a history of political thought to question the conceptual conventions and tacit assumptions which surround the concept of private and public. Through a critical analysis of the conception of domestic relations developed by Natural Law theorists Locke and Hutcheson, Gobetti shows the ambivalence of the liberal distinction between private and public. Normatively upheld as essential for the good society, the distinction proves to proves to be built on shaky ground if the individualistic assumptions of Natural Law theory are to be taken seriously. ... Product Description
Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) was a key figure in the Scottish Enlightenment and one of the eighteenth century's most influential philosophers. He taught Adam Smith and he greatly influenced Hume and Bentham. His theory that the only proper actions are those which will generally benefit society prepared the way for the English utilitarians. His views were extensively discussed throughout Britain and ranged as far as the American colonies, where his political theory was adopted by revolutionaries. He is best known for his contribution to moral theory, being the chief exponent of the 'moral sense' doctrine which, following Shaftesbury, emphasized feeling rather than reasoning as the source of judgements of virtue and vice. A System of Moral Philosophy was written as early as 1738, but added to and altered by Hutcheson throughout his life. Published posthumously in 1755 by Hutcheson's son, Francis the younger, the System is Hutcheson's longest work and the fullest explanation of his method.Giving a comprehensive account of morality, it includes discussions of human nature; our duties to God, to each other and ourselves; the supreme good; civil liberty; rights; contracts; marriage; the rights and duties of parents; and the laws of peace and war. The work also contains an argument against slavery that was reprinted in colonial Philadelphia and helped give academic weight to the antislavery movement. William Leechman, a friend of Hutcheson and Professor of Divinity at Glasgow, contributes a highly valuable biography. This edition also includes a new introduction by Daniel Carey. ... Read more

Excerpt: Isaac Asimov (Russian: pronounced ; born Isaak Yudovich Ozimov, Russian: ; c. January 2, 1920 April 6, 1992), was an American author and professor of biochemistry at Boston University, best known for his works of science fiction and for his popular science books. Asimov was one of the most prolific writers of all time, having written or edited about 500 books and over 9,000 letters and postcards. His works have been published in nine of the ten major categories of the Dewey Decimal System (the sole exception being the 100s: philosophy and psychology). Isaac Asimov is widely considered a master of the science-fiction genre and, along with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, he was considered one of the "Big Three" science-fiction writers during his lifetime. Asimov's most famous work is the Foundation Series; his other major series are the Galactic Empire series and the Robot series, both of which he later tied into the same fictional universe as the Foundation Series to create a unified "future history" for his stories much like those pioneered by Robert A. Heinlein and previously produced by Cordwainer Smith and Poul Anderson. He penned numerous short stories, among them "Nightfall", which in 1964 was voted by the Science Fiction Writers of America the best short science fiction story of all time, an accolade that many still find persuasive. Asimov wrote the Lucky Starr series of juvenile science-fiction novels using the pen name Paul French. The prolific Asimov also wrote mysteries and fantasy, as...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14573 ... Read more

Excerpt: Francis Hutcheson (August 8, 1694 August 8, 1746) was a philosopher born in Ireland to a family of Scottish Presbyterians who became one of the founding fathers of the Scottish Enlightenment. He is thought to have been born at Drumalig, in the parish of Saintfield, County Down, Ireland. Hutcheson was educated at Killyleagh, and went on to Scotland to study at the University of Glasgow, where he spent six years at first in the study of philosophy, classics and general literature, and afterwards in the study of theology, receiving his degree in 1712 and obtaining his license to preach within the Presbyterian church in 1716. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.
