Excerpt: Ibn Khaldn or Ibn Khaldoun (full name, Arabic: , , (May 27, 1332 AD/732 AH March 19, 1406 AD/808 AH) was an Arab polymath an astronomer, economist, historian, Islamic jurist, Islamic lawyer, Islamic scholar, Islamic theologian, hafiz, mathematician, military strategist, nutritionist, philosopher, social scientist and statesmanborn in North Africa in present-day Tunisia. He is considered a forerunner of several social scientific disciplines: demography, cultural history, historiography, the philosophy of history, and sociology. He is also considered one of the forerunners of modern economics, alongside the earlier Indian scholar Chanakya. Ibn Khaldun is considered by many to be the father of a number of these disciplines, and of social sciences in general, for anticipating many elements of these disciplines centuries before they were founded in the West. He is best known for his Muqaddimah (known as Prolegomenon in English), the first volume of his book on universal history, Kitab al-Ibar. Ibn Khaldun's life is relatively well-documented, as he wrote an autobiography ( ; Al-Tarf bi Ibn-Khaldn wa Rilatuhu Gharbn wa Sharqn) in which numerous documents regarding his life are quoted word-for-word. However, the autobiography has little to say about his private life, so little is known about his family background. Generally known as "Ibn Khaldn" after a remote ancestor, he was born in Tunis in AD 1332 (732 A.H.) into an upper-class Andalusian family, the Ban Khaldn. His family, which held many high offices in Andalusia, had emigrated to Tunisia after the fall of Seville to Reconquista forces around the middle of the 13th century. Under the Tunisian Hafsid dynasty some of his family...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=199169 ... Read more

From the supplier: Ibn Khaldun is a famous philosopher born in Tunisia in 1332. He is considered the first sociologist for his written work 'al-Muqaddimah' where he explains how history should be studied. A comprehensive theory of the dynastic cyle was developed by Ibn Khaldun. He attributed the size of a city to both intensity of competition and size of the market for luxuries rather than division of labor. Group feeling is a sense of solidary among people derived from a long history of companionship. Ibn Khaldun's economic thoughts are presented and analyzed.

Chanakya was an adviser and a prime ministerto the first Maurya Emperor Chandragupta. And was the chief architect of his rise to power. Kautilya and Vishnugupta, the names by which the ancient Indian political treatise called the Artha??stra identifies its author, are traditionally identified with Chanakya.Chanakya has been considered as the pioneer of the field of economics and political science, having first written about the subject a millennium and a half before Ibn Khaldun's Muqaddimah. In the western world, he has been the referred to as "The Indian Machiavelli", although Chanakya's works predate him by about 1,800 years. Excerpt: Leon Trotsky (Russian: ·), Ukrainian: (Lev Davidovich Trotsky, also transliterated Lyev, Trotski, Trotskij, Trockij and Trotzky) 7 November 1879 21 August 1940), born Lev Davidovich Bronstein (Russian: ), was a Bolshevik revolutionary and Marxist theorist. He was one of the leaders of the Russian October Revolution, second only to Vladimir Lenin. During the early days of the Soviet Union, he served first as People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs and later as the founder and commander of the Red Army and People's Commissar of War. He was also among the first members of the Politburo. After leading a failed struggle of the Left Opposition against the policies and rise of Joseph Stalin in the 1920s and the increasing role of bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, Trotsky was expelled from the Communist Party and deported from the Soviet Union. An early advocate of Red Army intervention against European fascism, Trotsky also opposed Stalin's peace agreements with Adolf Hitler in the 1930s. Product Description
This book deals with Ibn Khaldun's social perspective of the major institutions: the family, education, religion, politics, and economics. The family is seen in its association with city life. The role of the family and education in the development of human personality is emphasized. Ibn Khaldun dealt with the social dimension of knowledge in its many ramifications. Religion is discussed by stressing the social perspective rather than the theological, especially the reciprocal relationship between group solidarity and religion. Moreover, social solidarity plays a dynamic role in the formation and decline of political groups. Even economic activities are culturally defined. Such activities have a great impact upon social interaction, especially in dealing with the value of human labor and socioeconomic stratification. In spite of its highly innovative appearance, the Khaldunian theory was a product of a long series of the Islamic-Arabic movements of thought. ... Read more

Excerpt:Saint Paul by Vanni. Andrea Vanni (1332-c. 1414) was an Italian painter of the early Renaissance . He was born in Siena , and in conjunction with Bartolo di Maestro Fredi , began to paint in 1353. He seems to have been important in Siena, having been elected a member of the Great Council in 1370, Gonfaloniero in 1371, sent as Envoy to the Pope at Avignon in 1372, on a mission to Florence in 1373, and again as Envoy to the Pope at Naples in 1384. Many examples exist of his paintings between 1353 and 1414 in Naples and its vicinity. At the chapel of St. Catherine of Siena , in the church of San Domenico, Naples , can be found the remains of a fresco painted by him to commemorate the life of that saint, who was a correspondent and perhaps a relation of his own. A letter from St. Catherine to Vanni survives. About the year 1400, he painted her portrait with scenes from the life of St. James, in a chapel in San Jacomo Interciso, but these works have disappeared. He also decorated three chapels in the cathedral of Siena; finished other work on its facade in 1380; and in 1398 painted an ' Annunciation' for the same building. References (URLs online) There is a painting by Andrea Vanni("Mourning Madonna")at the Chazen Art Museum in Madison,Wisconsin. There is also a triptych by this Sienese painter at the Corcoran Art Museum in Washington,D.C.
