Product Description
The impact of the work of German mathematician GOTTFRIED WILHELM LEIBNIZ (1646-1716) on modern science and technology is all but incalculable. His notation for infinitesimal calculus-which he developed independently of Newton-remains in use today, and his invention of binary counting is the basis for modern computing. He was a powerfully influential philosopher as well, and is still considered, alongside Descartes and Spinoza, one of the great 17th-century rationalists.Because much of Leibniz's thinking in the realm of the sciences flowed from his philosophy, understanding how he approached the natural world and humanity's place in it is vital to understanding his contributions to modern science. This edition collects two of Leibniz's foundational works, "Discourse on Metaphysics" and "The Monadology," which expound on concepts of philosophical "optimism"-that we live in the best of all possible worlds-and consequently features Leibniz's thoughts on the nature of physical matter. This classic work will intrigue all students of science and philosophy. ... Product Description
A brilliant mathematical physicist, Leibniz strove to place science on religious foundations, outlining an active, organic and spiritual world composed of free individual substances harmoniously working out God's purposes. In doing so this major rationalist philosopher revolutionized logic, proposed notions too startling to publish, and laid bare scientific assumptions that many of us still possess. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A selection of philosophical texts by Leibniz.
This book is a collection of various texts by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716). Leibniz was a first-class mathematician, and also a first-class philosopher. In mathematics, in parallel with and independentlyof Newton, he developed infinitesimal calculus, the indispensableinstrument of modern science. In philosophy, he published, in 1710, inFrench, one chief work: "Essay on Theodicy, the Goodness of God, Man'sFreedom and the Origin of Evil". The most important of hisphilosophical works were published at various times after his death: theDiscourse on Metaphysics was published in 1846, and most of his esoterictexts on metaphysical issues were published in as late as 1903 (L.Couturat, Opuscules et fragments inedits de Leibniz) and 1948 (G. Grua, G.W. Leibniz, Textes inedits). Leibniz wrote scarcely, if at all, in hisnative languague, German. He preferred to write in Latin or French. Thisvolume contains selections, in translation, from many of his chief works, including some outstanding texts from the 1903 Couturat edition. Theseinclude a text on "Necessary and Contingent Truths" and "ALetter on Freedom". Leibniz distinguished truths (statements) intonecessary, i.e., mathematical or logical truths, and contingent orexistential truths. Those truths are necessary whose opposite isself-contradictory, i.e., impossible. On the other hand, contingent truthsare those whose opposite is not self-contradictory, and therefore possible.Examples of necessary truths are given from arithmetic, while examples ofexistential truths are "that I am now alive, that the sun isshining". Leibniz develops, based on this distinction, a superbmetaphysical theory on the structure of causation and of the freedom of thewill. The importance of these excerpts can hardly be overemphasized, andfor these texts alone the book should be worth possessing. This volume alsocontains excerpts from better known texts by Leibniz, such as TheMonadology, The Discourse on Metaphysics, and Leibniz's correspondence withArnauld and with Clarke. Leibniz is a superb and original thinker inphilosophy, as he is in science and in mathematics. His style is crisp anddry, not lofty and poetical as is the style of his contemporary B. Spinoza. The great metaphysical questions (free will, predestination, God and man)are attacked mercilessly and unto their ultimate logical conlusions.Leibniz's full awareness of the scientific achievements of his epoch, makeshim a thoroughly modern thinker, up to this present time. ... Patrick Riley takes Leibniz to a new Level. As a student of Riley I learned first hand what this book was all about.Exploration of Leibniz both as a philosopher and as a jurisprude were taken into acount in this anthology. This is an excelent companion to his book "Leibniz' Universal Jurisprudence: Justice As the Charity of the Wise."The previously unpublished (and untraslated) works present in this anthology show Leibniz's reaction to rationalist and theological determinism, as well as complement Leibniz's own Theodecy. This is a must buy for anyone who wants to Learn about Leibniz's philosophy, or just read it for fun ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ruthlessly rational thinking.
Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was a par excellence rational thinker, i.e., one who accomplished his intellectual pursuits primarily by means of logically rigorous argumentation rather than by intuition. (It could be argued thatboth Descartes and Spinoza allowed themselves to be moved by feeling morethan Leibniz ever did, in fact, Spinoza himself conceptualized this verytendency and named it the "third kind of knowledge" or the"intuitive knowledge of God" - cognitio Dei intuitiva). Theoutcome of this ruthlessly logical conception of the world is Leibniz's"Monadology". I believe it will serve best to focus on the mainmetaphysical thesis of this great work, by referring to the views, not of aprofessional philosopher but of a 20th century eminent man of science, thephysicist Erwin Schroedinger (1887-1961, Nobel Prize for Physics, 1933).Schroedinger, in his book: "Mind and Matter" (CambridgeUniversity Press, 1958) writes (Chapter 4: "The arithmtical paradox:the oneness of mind):

"The reason why our sentient, percipientand thinking ego is met nowhere within our scientific world picture caneasily be indicated in seven words: because it is itself that worldpicture. It is identical with the whole and therefore cannot be containedin it as part of it. But of course here we knock agaist the arithmeticalparadox; there appears to be a great multitude of these conscious egos, theworld however is only one. ...There are two ways out of the numberparadox, both appearing rather lunatic from the point of view of presentscientific thought (based on ancient Greek thought and thus thoroughly"Western"). One way out is the multiplication of the world inLeibniz's fearful doctrine of monads: every monad to be a world in itself,no communication between them; the monad "has no windows", it is"incommunicado". That none the less they all agree with eachother is called "pre-established harmony". I think there are fewto whom this suggestion appeals, nay who would consider it as a mitigationalone of the numerical antinomy. There is obviously only onealternative, namely the unification of the minds or consciousness. Theirmultiplicity is only apparent, in truth there is only one mind".Weobserve that, both Leibniz and Schroedinger, in this juxtaposition ofviews, help us towards an awareness of the ultimate limits of the knowable. ...
