From the author: Objective: To compare near-concurrent and retrospective reports of alcohol consumption and to determine whether a simple adjustment function could be applied to the retrospective reports to correct any distortions in reporting. Method: Reports of daily alcohol consumption collected via an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system were aggregated over 30, 90 and 366 days and compared with the corresponding retrospective reports gathered with the Timeline Follow Back (TLFB). Comparisons of the IVR and TLFB reports for five consumption variables were made for each time period for 33 men. Results: Significant differences between reporting methods were found for four of the five variables tested. On average, the TLFB yielded an underestimate of alcohol consumption compared to the IVR. This underestimate associated with TLFB reports was not dependent on the length of the recall period. Regression analyses indicated that the relationship between the two modalities of reporting was dependent on the quantity of drinks reported, thus precluding the application of a simple, linear metric to the TLFB data to model near real-time daily data obtained through the IVR more accurately. Conclusions: The retrospective TLFB consistently and significantly underestimated alcohol consumption compared to the aggregated daily reports. This underestimate, however, was stable across the three reporting periods. With one exception, no simple linear function could be applied to the retrospective TLFB consumption reports to more accurately reflect the IVR data gathered daily. Evidence presented here also suggests that underreporting on the TLFB is not simply a matter of consciously attempting to conceal consumption.

From the author: Objective: Three groups varying in familial alcoholism risk were compared with respect to amount of alcohol consumption, presence of personality pathology, and the relationship between personality pathology and alcohol consumption. Method: Research subjects were young adult men recruited from local colleges, a trade school and the community. The risk groups included (1) a group with a biological alcoholic father and significant additional familial alcoholism (n = 106); (2) subjects with an alcoholic father, but without significant additional familial alcoholism (n = 100); and (3) a group with no paternal alcoholism and at most only one second/third-degree alcoholic relative (n = 190). Absolute daily ounces of alcohol was determined using a standard quantity-frequency scale. Prevalence of DSM-III-R personality disorders (PDs) was evaluated using the Personality Disorder Questionnaire-Revised both with and without application of an impairment and distress scale. Familial risk determination was based on agreement between four separate self-report assessments. Results: The first group consumed significantly more alcohol than the other two groups, which did not differ in alcohol consumption. The first group's subjects were more likely to meet criteria for virtually all of the PD diagnoses than were the other two groups. A greater proportion of the second group's subjects qualified for various PDs than did the third group's subjects. Personality pathology was consistently or usually associated with more drinking in the first and third groups, respectively, but associated with less consumption in the second group. Conclusions: Young men with high-density familial alcoholism are at greater risk for the development of alcoholism than those with alcoholic fathers and little additional familial alcoholism. Relationships between personality pathology and alcohol consumption, and possibly the development of alcoholism, differ for the three risk groups. (J. Stud. Alcohol 59: 495-502, 1998)

From the supplier: Three groups of male subjects with varying familial risks for alcoholism were compared with respect to their personal pathology, amount of alcohol consumption, and relationship between alcohol consumption and personality pathology. The first group included subjects with biological alcoholic fathers and other familial alcoholism. The second group involved subjects with only alcoholic fathers. Members of the third group had one alcoholic relative but no paternal alcoholism.

Book Description
A dictionary definition of Bioethics is, 'the ethics, or moral principles and rules of conduct, of medical and biological research'. This book is an introductory text of just biological and not medical bioethics. It covers the ethics of experimentation, including genetic manipulation, in plants and animals; ethics and biodiversity, ethics and the environment.

There is increasing interest in bioethics - both in academia and by the media and the general public. Awareness of bioethics is incorporated into Biological / Environmental Science courses, plus the first dedicated modular courses on bioethics are starting up.

  • Includes case studies
  • Has questions for students
  • Chapters include environmental, animal, agricultural and reproductive ethics as well as a wide range of issues regarding genetic manipulation.

Download Description
Bioethics for Scientists provides an introduction to the ethics of modern life sciences and encompasses a wide range of environmental, social, scientific and medical issues. Subjects such as global warming, GM crops and the recent advances in genetics and cloning affect all areas of society. Scientists in all fields are frequently reminded of their own responsibilities, not just within their own profession but also to society.

International experts provide in-depth discussion of these subjects with a clear understanding of the science involved, and explore different approaches and opinions which consider the implications of these issues on science and society. Bioethics for Scientists will show you how to think about the issues without trying to tell you what to think. Where relevant, case studies are included to support these discussions.

This book includes chapters on:

  • environmental ethics
  • use of natural resources
  • experimental use of animals
  • crop biotechnology and GM foods
  • patenting life

  • human genetics and genetic enhancement · cloning of humans and animals
  • euthanasia and related issues

Written in a very readable style, Bioethics for Scientists is essential reading for students and researchers in biotechnology, life, environmental and other sciences, plus anyone who wishes to improve their understanding of this complex and fascinating area.

'[This book] specialises in the public understanding and attitudes towards biotechnology and the social and ethical implications of the new genetics…' Dr J R Downie, Division of Environmental & Evolutionary Biology, University of Glasgow, UK

2-0 out of 5 stars bioethics by scientists?
Most of the chapters in this book seem to be written by scientists, not academic philosophers or ethicists. So, unfortunately, they tend to not be very subtle, sophisticiated or carefully argued.I'd recommend something written by specialists in ethics, not scientists, to learn more about how to reasonably address some of the ethical issues that confront scientists.Almost any bioethics anthology edited by philosophers would do that.

I borrowed this book from the libary mostly because I was interested in looking at the chapters on animal experimentation. With the exception of the very fine chapter by philosophy Ray Frey, the remaining chapters on this issue were not up to snuff. ... Read more

From the author: Objective: Neurocognitive models of alcohol use and mathematical models of drinking patterns suggest that levels of drinking on one day should affect probabilities of drinking on subsequent days. However, there has been no demonstration in the alcohol literature that these structured temporal dependencies appear in daily patterns of alcohol use. A model of daily drinking is presented that relates probabilities of drinking on any day to amounts consumed 1 day and 1 week before. It is assumed that positive and negative experiences with alcohol shape drinking levels and probabilities of subsequent drinking. The model predicts that nonmonotonic functions will relate drinking levels to subsequent drinking probabilities. Maxima of these functions represent optimal drinking levels that provide greatest positive returns from any drinking occasion for each drinker. Method: Interactive Voice Response technology was used to obtain annual time series of daily drinking levels from 33 drinkers sampled from public establishments in Vermont. Two predictions from the model were tested: (1) Temporal dependencies exist between the onset of drinking events over time; and (2) these dependencies are nonmonotonically related to prior drinking levels. Dynamics were separately assessed for each drinker using bootstrapped logistic regression models. Results: Thirty respondents provided data suitable for analysis. Time series data from five of these respondents exhibited no temporal dynamics (17%). Data from 25 respondents exhibited either daily or weekly dynamics (83%). Data from 18 respondents exhibited the expected nonmonotonic relationship between drinking levels and subsequent drinking events (60%). Conclusions: Daily probabilities of drinking were conditional upon and nonmonotonically related to prior drinking levels among a majority of respondents. The results of the study support models of daily drinking in which positive and negative experiences with alcohol shape daily drinking patterns.

From the author: Objective: We conducted a formal analysis of the potential effects on alcohol consumption of daily reports to an Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system over a 2-year period. Method: Thirty-three white men who had been recruited from bars were invited to call a toll-free number daily to answer a 2-minute questionnaire regarding alcohol consumption the previous day, reasons for drinking or not drinking, mood and stress levels, and a few other relevant items. A recorded voice asked the questions and callers responded using the telephone keypad. During the 2-year study, all subjects were personally interviewed each quarter, including regular Timeline Follow Back (TLFB) assessments. We compared mean consumption levels reported for the first year with those reported the second year. Results: Although there were consistent seasonal variations and holiday peaks, reported consumption declined over the 2 years of study. A comparison of average consumption across all subjects revealed significant declines in drinks per day, drinking days per week, and drinks per drinking day. Analysis of individuals showed at least some reduction in 82% of the subjects and statistically significant reductions in 45%. There was an estimated 19% reduction in consumption from Year 1 to Year 2 based on the IVR reports and a 21% reduction as ascertained by the TLFB. No significant changes were observed in nonalcohol-related measures. Conclusions: After exploring possible reasons for our results, we conclude that the most likely explanation of the decline in alcohol consumption is a reactivity effect due to reporting consumption regularly. The results suggest that IVR may have potential utility as an intervention for excessive alcohol consumption.
