Canadians have devoted considerable thought to Hegel - a proposition born out by the work of John Watson, George Grant, and Charles Taylor, three major Canadian political philosophers of the last century. In "Northern Spirits", Robert Sibley examines how Watson, Grant, and Taylor found in Hegel the theoretical tools needed to respond to Canada's uncertain existence. The recovery of Watson's thought is particularly valuable. Sibley shows that Watson, an internationally respected philosopher in the early twentieth century, discussed idealism and support for imperialism in ways that are particularly relevant in our new age of empire. A consideration of Grant's relationship to Hegel illuminates what led Grant to declare that Canada was "impossible" in the age of technology. Eventhou the articials in this book are technical reports from a scientific conference most provide easy reading for the layperson.

Artificial Life is a fassinating scientific endevor that seeks to do for biology what Artificial Instelligence did for psychology -- model biological processes, instead of mental processes on the computer and look to biology as a model for computation -- using techniques such as Genetic Algorithms, Cellular Automata and Neural Networks.

I find that all the books I've read that were published by the Santa Fe Institute to be intresting -- how ever the Artifical Life series is the easiest for an armchair scientist to grasp. ... Read more

The captions locate the illustrations in the flow of the narrative and relate them to the primary meaning of the action at the place depicted. The authors try to provided enough information and observation about the pictures so that a reader who knows the text, or reads along in an annotated translation, can easily get its point. The essays that are interspersed with the illustrations are intended to suggest how deeply the poem explores the stages of moral and spiritual development in images that are psychologically acute for people today. ...
