Physics will be considered in this article both as a body of knowledge and as the practice that makes and transmits it. Physics acquired its classical form between the late Renaissance and the end of the 19th century. The year 1900 is a convenient boundary between classical and modern physics. PRACTICE OF PHYSICS The Aristotelian conception of the scope of physics prevailed in the universities into the 18th century. Meanwhile, a different conception developed outside the schools, exemplified in William GILBERT's De magnete (1600), the work of a practicing physician. Gilbert's book on magnetism was the first report of connected, sustained, and reconfirmed experiments in the history of physics. Magnetism became a popular study and not only for practical application: it could also be used in "natural magic"the production of perplexing effects by concealed mechanisms. Such magic figured prominently in the academies or museums formed in the 17th century by gentlemen virtuosos interested in the unusual. Their play often amounted to experiment. Many of their practicesfor example, cooperative work and showy demonstrationsrecurred in the first national academies of science, which were established in London and Paris in the 1660s.

    Extractions: KTF History of Physics in Prague The beginning of science in the Czech territory is related to the founding of the Charles University in Prague by Emperor Charles IV in 1348. During the first centuries of its existence the lectures on physics and astronomy were held in the arts (now philosophy) faculty. The outstanding personalities were Christian of Prachatice (1366-1439), a close friend of Master Jan Hus, and Jan Ondrejuv called Sindel (1375-1454). They were concerned with astronomical observations. Sindel's measurements of the planets and the Sun were so accurate that they were still praised by Tycho Brahe two centuries later. The high level of science in Prague at that time is confirmed by sophisticated Prague Astronomical Clock at the Old Town Hall - the medieval planetarium. It was made according to Sindel's plans by the clockmaster Mikulas of Kadan in 1410. During the religiously tolerant reign of Emperor Rudolph II (1576-1612) who was interested in science and arts, favourable conditions for the development of natural sciences were established. The personal physician of Rudolph II and astronomer Tadeas Hajek of Hajek (1525-1600) published his studies of a supernova in the constellation Cassiopea in 1572. Hájek was in frequent scientific correspondence with the recognized astronomer

    Extractions: The early Greek and Indian cosmologies are summarized in this paper. The two traditions appear to have developed independently although after the time of Alexander they were consciously aware of each other. The focus and style of the two sciences was different owing to their different cosmologies. Perhaps the only science which worked more or less the same way in the two civilizations was medicine. But even here there was important difference. The reason why the two sciences went their own way in spite of the knowledge of the other was because their worldviews were different. Indian astronomers, for example, never paid any attention to Ptolemy's model with its crystalline spheres that looked restrictive compared to the vast scale of their own conception.
