The United Free Church of Scotland came into being in 1900 with the union of the Free Church of Scotland and the United Presbyterian Church. Both of these arose from the problems caused by state interference in the life of the Church and the issue of patronage in particular. As presently constituted it dates from 1929 when a minority of the Church refused to enter a union with the Church of Scotland on the grounds that it opposed the state recognition of any one particular denomination. (John 10:10) Welcome to the Parish of Ceres and Springfield, situated in a beautiful, rural part of the east of Scotland. Our parish is in north east Fife, a few miles from the county town Cupar and the town of St Andrews - the world-famous home of golf and seat of Scotland's oldest University, founded in 1411. This is an excellent area for holidays (the Scottish Tourist Board would be delighted to hear from you!) Our parish includes the villages of Ceres, Springfield, Pitscottie, Craigrothie and Chance Inn, with churches at Ceres and Springfield. To the south, the City of Edinburgh is only 1 hour away by road or train and the City of Dundee is less than 25 minutes away to the north. Local bus services are provided by Stagecoach (Fife Scottish Omnibuses), for times tel. 01334-474238, and the nearest railway stations are at Cupar and Springfield. Ceres is one of the most attractive and historic villages in Scotland, notable for its statue of the Provost, the Fife Folk Museum, the Hill of Tarvit Mansion House, Archbishop Sharp's Bridge and for having the shortest High Street in Scotland. Ceres Church was built in 1806, replacing an older church on the site. It is a grade B listed building and largely unchanged since first built. One of its most unusual features are the long Communion tables running the full length of the church. The church building is open for services, on "Doors Open Day" every September (see local publicity) and also on request. The history of Ceres can be traced back almost 1100 years; a church was established by Celtic Christian "Culdee" monks from nearby St Andrews. Ceres also has its own primary school, shops, Post Office and newsagent - the village lies on the B939 road, approximately 7 miles west of St Andrews.

Extractions: As you can read in the latest Fishwrapper we have been settling in to the new and challenging work with the Karen Christians of the 16th Presbytery of the Church of Christ in Thailand. We are finding the Karen to be wonderful neighbors and hosts. Despite all the challenges the people face they are warm and outgoing. Always seeing the positive and always hoping for the best. The Karen people and the Church which is called to serve them are under constant political and cultural pressure. Have a look at some of the linked websites to the left to findout some of the horrific details of the oppression faced by the Karen living in Burma. Recent evictions of this indigeneous people from forest homelands and the fact that many are seen as 2nd or 3rd rate citizens (eg. given only hilltribe status and restricted as to rights of movement) highlights the difficult situation they face in Thailand as well. Klity, where one of the Presbytery's new believers' groups is located has suffered from the exploitative practice of a lead mine.

Publisher's Introduction Preface Chapter 1 The Gifts Freely Given to the Kirk In 1559, John Knox returned to his homeland, marking a new effort in the battle to reform Scotland. Throughout the nation, Protestants joined together in a solemn covenant, pledging their lives and fortunes for the cause of Christ. The Queen Regent, Mary of Guise, was a hardened Papist, and she opposed all endeavours to reform Scotland. The Queen Regent died in 1560, and the Scottish Parliament convened in Edinburgh in August, to address many issues confronting the restless nation. In the History of the Reformation in Scotland , Knox gives a record of the drama which unfolded. A supplication was laid before the Parliament by the Protestant nobility, decrying the corruptions of Roman Catholicism, and seeking the abolition of Popery. The petition of the Protestants exclaimed, "We offer ourselves to prove, that in all the [rabble of the clergy] there is not one lawful minister, if God's word, the practice of the apostles, and their own ancient laws shall judge of lawful election. We further offer ourselves to prove them all thieves and murderers: yea, rebels and traitors to the lawful authority of empires, kings, and princes; and therefore unworthy to be suffered in any reformed commonwealth."[1]

Extractions: by Douglas Ansdell Four ecclesiastical traditions are largely responsible for shaping the history of the Christian church in Scotland. They are those of the Roman Catholic, Episcopal, Presbyterian and Independent churches. The Roman Catholic can claim the most enduring association with Scottish history, but its dominant position was undermined by the Reformation in Scotland in 1560. Although the Presbyterian Church of Scotland can locate its origins in the events of 1560, it was 1689 before the Church in Scotland emerged clearly in its Presbyterian and Episcopal forms. At this point the Presbyterian Church of Scotland was established by law, and in the years that followed the Episcopal Church had to contend with restrictive legislation and consequently lost considerable support. The Church of Scotland's supremacy was somewhat frustrated by the persistence of the Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches in Scotland and further undermined by two secessions from the Church of Scotland in the eighteenth-century.
