Z The sect organised in German-speaking countries to combat the dogma of Papal Infallibility Filled with ideas of ecclesiastical Liberalism and rejecting the Christian spirit of submission to the teachings of the Church, nearly 1400 Germans issued, in September, 1870, a declaration in which they repudiated the dogma of Infallibility "as an innovation contrary to the traditional faith of the Church". They were encouraged by large numbers of scholars, politicians, and statesmen, and were acclaimed by the Liberal press of the whole world. The break with the Church began with this declaration, which was put forth notwithstanding the fact that the majority of the German bishops issued, at Fulda on 30 August, a common pastoral letter in support of the dogma. It was not until 10 April, 1871, that Bishop Hefele of Rotterdam issued a letter concerning the dogma to his clergy. By the end of 1870 all the Austrian and Swiss bishops had done the same. The movement against the dogma was carried on with such energy that the first Old Catholic Congress was able to meet at Munich, 22-24 September, 1871. History The Old Catholics arrival is fairly recent in theUnited States when compared to their involvement in Europe; many first generation Old Catholics in America are still active in their congregations, while the history of the Old Catholics begins in Europe a few centuries ago. Some argue the basic beliefs and motivations of Old Catholicism began in the sixteenth century with Cornelius Jansen and the incidents at Port Royal. Cornelius Jansen (1585-1638) believed that after the time of St. Augustine, the Catholic Church began to decline in practice and beliefs. Abbe de St. Cyran (1581-1641) also agreed with Jansen and claimed only the Port Royal Community in France with their extremely conservative lifestyle were the true devotees of Catholicism. In turn, the community lost the support of friends and Pope Clement XI. On September 8, 1713 the Pope issueda bill called "Unigentius" which contained the misconduct of Jansen's teachings and punishments for following these teachings. Many fled to Protestant Holland where they were received although the Protestants had more serious issues and concerns of their own and they did not fully agree with the credence of Jansen. The common thread they shared that bonded them was their antipathy for the Jesuits.

   Extractions: Self-Help versus State-Pensions (3rd edition) ; Plea ,for Liberty (1892 OLDCASTLE, SIR JOHN (d. 1417), English Lollard leader, was son of Sir Richard Oldcastle of Almeley in Herefordshire. He is first mentioned as serving in the expedition to Scotland in 1400, when he was probably quite a young man. Next year he was in charge of Builth castle in Brecon, and serving all through the Welsh campaigns won the friendship and esteem of Henry, the prince of Wales. Oldcastle represented Herefordshire in the parliament of 1404. Four years later he married Joan, the heiress of Cobham, and was thereon summoned to parliament as Lord Cobham in her right. As a trusted supporter of the prince, Oldcastle held a high command in the expedition which the young Oldcastle died a martyr. He was no doubt a man of fine quality, but circumstances made him a traitor, and it is impossible altogether to condemn his execution. His unpopular opinions and early friendship with Henry V. created a traditional scandal which long continued. In the old play The~Famous Victories of Henry V., written before 1588, Oldcastle figures as the prince’s boon companion. When Shakespeare adapted that play in Henry IV., Oldcastle still appeared; but when the play was printed in 1598 Falstaff’s name was substituted, in deference, as it is said, to the then Lord Cobham. Though the fat knight still remains “my old lad of the Castle,” the stage character has nothing to do with the Lollard leader.

In 1572 the Catholics of Rotterdam were expelled from the church of St. Lawrence, the old parish church of Rotterdam. They began to gather in a hidden church and when that became too small, the curate Bernard Hoogewerff founded in 1638 a chapel in his house “Het Paradijs” (Paradise). In 1647 the catholic congregation of this chapel became an independant parish with saints Peter and Paul as patrons. Hoewever the present parish church is still best known as the “Paradijskerk”. Father Hoogewerff endowed the church with many silver altar ornaments, that are still there to be admired. In 1719 a new church was built on the same site - for obvious reasons a hidden church again. On the outside it looked like an ordinary dwelling place, but that was a disguise for a rich church interior. This church was designed by the famous architect Daniël Marot. The Flemish sculptor Alexander Dominicus Pluskens worked in this new church from 1720 to 1725, making the splendid high altar, the communion rail, the pulpit and the organ front. In 1907 this hidden church began to show signs of decay, whereupon the church council decided to build a new, entirely different church, with two towers. The interior, however, was kept intact so all the beautiful carvings and sculpture could be fitted into the new church.

As an entire group, Old (and Independent) Catholic jurisdictions form a diverse spectrum of usage and theological opinion ranging from those who support women's ordination to those who maintain pre Vatican I (and two) teachings and usages, to those who express Byzantine and Orthodox rites. General Observations There are a few observations which can be made that apply to most all Old Catholics. In general, Old Catholics (as well as Independent Catholics) recognize the role played by the Pope as a key role in the world, but not as the sole ruler of the Catholic world. Old Catholics may revere the Pope but are not subject to his rule. They tend to govern themselves by Synods of Bishops rather than concentration of power in a single individual. Old Catholics cherish, maintain and promote the value of the Apostolic Succession, having valid succession recognized by Rome itself.
