Extractions: The Old Catholics are a body of Christians committed to the Person of Jesus Christ and His teaching. We accept and believe the testimony of His Apostles, eyewitnesses of His Life, Death and Resurrection from among the dead. They passed on to succeeding generations their own testimony about Jesus Christ and His life. By the proclaiming of His Gospel, and the giving of their own testimony (called the Apostolic Tradition), the Church, which the Lord instituted, was built up. Old Catholics are an historic part of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and have their origins in the Ancient Catholic Church of the Netherlands. We will examine the traditions of the Western and Eastern lineage herein. The Old Catholic Church of the United States bears its Apostolic lineage from the Ancient Catholic Church of the Netherlands, the Syrian Orthodox (Oriental) Church of Antioch, and the Russian Orthodox Church. Following the First Vatican Council in 1870 (at which the hierarchy of the Church of Holland were refused admittance), a considerable dissent among Catholics, especially in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, arose over the dogma of papal infallibility. The dissenters, while holding the Church in General Council to be infallible, could not accept the proposition that the Pope, acting alone, in matters of faith and morals is infallible. Many formed independent communities that came to be known as "Old Catholic". They are called "Old Catholics" because they sought to adhere to the beliefs and practices of the Catholic Church of the post-Apostolic era and the theology of the Church prior to the Vatican Council. The Old Catholic communities appealed to the Archbishop of Utrecht who consecrated the first bishops for these communities. Frequently the inquirers are told that our Sacraments are not recognized by Rome. This is written to clear up any confusion that there might be on this point although the Roman Catholic Church is quite aware of its validity in all things and has no interest in gaining "recognition" from any other quarters. This is not in our defense nor is it written to justify our being. It is to inform the uninformed. The statements presented here are from official authorities, theologians and publications of the Roman Catholic Church in the affirmation of the validity of Old Catholic Holy Orders and Sacraments. "When a Catholic sacred minister is unavailable and there is urgent spiritual necessity, Catholics may receive the Eucharist, penance, or anointing from sacred ministers of non-Catholic denomination whose holy orders are considered valid by the Catholic Church. This includes all Eastern Orthodox priests, as well as priests of the Old Catholic or Polish National Church."

In this case "old" means "original or primitive." The difference between the Old Catholics and Roman Catholics is that for us the Pope of Rome is neither the source, nor the unique channel of authority in the church of God. The Pope holds his authority from the Church, not the Church from him. This principle enlivened the Old Catholic Church of Holland when she entered into conflict with Rome. We in America are her children by reason of our Apostolic Succession and ministry derived from her and remain true to the ancient faith she so jealously guards and transmits. Along with the Russian Orthodox, the Greek Orthodox, the Eastern Orthodox, the Church of Germany and Switzerland, the Old Catholics have felt bound to also reject the pretensions of the papacy, and thus do not recognize the supremacy or infallibility of the Bishop of Rome. Old Catholics receive the Holy Scriptures as Gods inspired word, as interpreted by the Church. We receive the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed, and the Creed of St. Athanasius, as consistent with Scripture and the Patristic fathers.

THE Old Catholic churches are seven small autocephalous churches in communion with the ancient see of Utrecht, which was founded by St. Willibrord in 697, and was excommunicated by Rome early in the eighteenth century. Their separate position is the result of three movements in different periods and countries; the struggle between the See of Utrecht and the Jesuits; the revolt in Germany and other countries against the Vatican Council; later "Los von Rom" movements in South-Eastern Europe and in America. The Old Catholic movement has always received much sympathy both from Orthodox and from Anglican authorities. The Oecumenical Patriarch Joachim II. sent his last message to his Anglican friends not to forget the Old Catholics: and successive Lambeth Conferences, ever since 1878, have offered special privileges to Old Catholics deprived of the ministry of their own clergy. The Old Catholics, like the Orthodox churches, accept the Seven Councils and the Seven Sacraments, but not the Papal Supremacy or the "Filioque" clause. They resemble the Anglican churches in being modern and critical, and in certain points of discipline: e.g., the clergy of all orders are permitted to marry after ordination. It is natural that Utrecht should be regarded as a bridge between Constantinople and Canterbury, with each of which if. has points of contact. And yet this is not quite the real place of the Old Catholic churches in the work of unity.

Extractions: The closest thing to an unbroken Western Orthodoxy is the Old Catholic Church - and sadly, this is no longer very close. This little known group has much in common with the best in the Anglican communion. The Old Catholic Church began in the Netherlands, which was evangelized in the eighth century A.D. by St. Willibrord. Though in communion with the Pope, they were given full autonomy to choose bishops and administer Church affairs; its main See is Utrecht. Traditional Christians went underground after the ascent of the Reformed Church in the low countries. Then in 1871, Vatican I declared the Immaculate Conception of Mary and Papal Infallibility as official church dogmas; Old Catholics (sometimes called the "Union of Utrecht") balked and left the Church. A long-standing ecumenical dialogue with Holy Orthodoxy had produced good results until recently. A commission of Orthodox and European Old Catholic bishops agreed that almost all conditions had been met for intercommunion. (The dialogue is available from the Polish National Catholic Church bookstore as "The Road to Unity" for $5.00 U.S.) However, some of the Old Catholics have held to the filioque clause, and others have accepted the Protestant canon of Scripture. Moreover, the Old Catholics had been in communion with the Anglican Communion until that group began the ordination of women (see below for more on Anglicanism), and to Orthodox intercommunion implies unity of faith. A few years ago, the some national churches of the Old Catholic communion themselves embraced the ordination of women and other liberal measures. Talks with the Orthodox predictably broke down, as have relations within the Union between traditional and modernizing churches.

Extractions: Orange, Calif. In the city of Orange in Southern California in a nondescript mall where commerce is king, a church is scarcely typical. The Church of St. Matthew is less typical still. It is an Old Catholic church. The Union of Utrecht became the Vatican for Old Catholics, except that the union was never able to keep its daughter churches on such a short leash as its prototype by the Tiber. Yet Utrecht is vitally important to Old Catholics in one regard: It is seen as source and guarantor of apostolic succession, that unbroken line that, Catholics insist, must go back to Jesus and the apostles. The name Old Catholic is seen by members as more confusing than helpful except for that all-important implication of proper pedigree. Obsessed with the need for apostolic succession, priests got themselves consecrated bishops on a grand scale. But in most such cases they had no flock, no priests. The best-organized exception, says Hickman, was the Polish National Catholic church headquartered in Scranton, Pa. This continues to be ethnically based and therefore exclusive. Anthony Cekada, SSPX Originally published in The Roman Catholic magazine, 1980 PLEASE NOTE: While this material was written by a former Society of St. Pius the Tenth (SSPX) priest, it is, nevertheless, good background information on the Old Catholics. I think it is fair to say that the various factions of the so-called "traditionalist" (which more or less includes the Old Catholics) movement can sometimes be excellent sources of information about their "traditionalist" competitors. Fr. Cekada was one of the "nine" ousted from the SSPX in 1983 by Archbishop Lefebvre and The Roman Catholic magazine was the official organ of what was the Northeast District of the Society at that time. The other district was the Southwest and its official publication was the Angelus. To my knowledge, Fr. Cekada has yet to be reconciled with the Catholic Church. As far as I am aware, Fr. Cekada is a sede vacantist and the last I heard is that he is at the CRMI's Mount St. Michael (June, 1999). Let us say that you are a traditional Roman Catholic, and that you come across an advertisement in the paper for a group which claims that they offer the traditional Latin Mass. You notice at the bottom of the ad that the group calls itself "Old Catholic" or "Old Roman Catholic." You are naturally quite puzzled by these terms, but you think that anyone who claims to be "Old" or "Roman" or "Catholic" can't really be too much different from the traditional Catholic priests you know. But, you ask, are they really legitimate Roman Catholics, and can one go to their Masses?

The Ancient Catholic Church of the Netherlands The Church in the Netherlands and the Reformation Armed with the protection of the papal concessions, the Church in the Netherlands continued to minister even through the Reformation. During this period of strife, the Church in the Netherlands, as in many other countries, was forced to "go underground" in order to survive. But survive and remain extant, it did. Eventually, the Archbishop of Utrecht and other Church leaders reached an informal agreement with the civil government, whereby it could again function openly without interference from the Reformers.
