Here is a small sample of the tools, customs, holidays, and practices of Paganism. This is in no way the only view or definition of these topics. Pagansim is a very diverse religion with several beliefs and practices. No one individual belief or practice is considered the "right" or "only" way. The following are just examples of the more common aspects of what you may find within the Pagan Community. Gods Tools Holidays Rituals The term Pagan is used to describe individuals who worship the Old Gods before Christianity. Although most Pagans are Nature oriented people (Those who worship the Old Nature Gods), some Pagans practice the worship of Old Gods which are not necessarily Nature oriented, such as the Egyptian Gods. Paganism is the term used to describe the religions of the Old Gods. There are several branches or "denominations" in Paganism. These include, but are not limited to, Wicca, Druidism, Egyptian, Nordic and Celtic. There are several sites on the Web detailing these religions, so I will leave that up to them. Check out my Pagan Links for these and other sites. Contrary to popular belief, Pagans do not worship "Satan". Satanists worship Satan. If Pagans DID worship the Christian creation "Satan", then we would call ourselves Satanists. Most Satanists, by nature of their religion, are very proud to be labeled Satanists. Pagans on the other hand dislike being called "Satanists" because we do not even believe in a "Satan", much less worship him.

Pagan and other indigenous beliefs exist all over the world in both South and North America, in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, and in Asia; it is also the ancestral heritage of many people in the modern West, some of whom still believe and practice forms of pre-Christian or traditional spirituality. The word "pagan" derives from the Latin "Paganius", a country dweller, implying someone who "lived in the sticks" and had their own rustic or regional way of doing things. "Pagan" in contemporary minds has a variety of connotations ranging from "a non-religious or secular person" to "a non-Christian" or "civilized heathen". Today's Pagans regard themselves as people who have retained the wisdom and values of their ancestors in modified ways which suit modern life. Aspects of modern Pagan belief in the West include the reverence of female as well as male aspects of Deity; a strong familial and community cohesion; a sense of ancestral heritage and of traditional respect for the land; festivals for seasonal celebration; a validation of oral traditions, stories and myths; a belief that spiritual practice beneficially changes our world; and an awareness of non-ordinary reality which is understood to impinge upon our daily lives. Sexual parity and personal spiritual expression are firmly upheld.

Both of us, as you will see below, consider ourselves Gothic Pagans. We know what this term means to us - our own unique viewpoint - but we'd like to know if others who find themselves at this crossroads define it the same way. We have included a questionnaire touching on what we find to be definite elements of Gothic Paganism . These may dovetail nicely with your own beliefs, or we may not even be in the same crematoria. Either way, we'd like your input. We conducted an introductory workshop on Gothic Paganism at a major pagan festival (Starwood) last summer and plan to do more; this questionnaire is part of our research towards that goal. Therefore any feedback is most welcome. You probably know one of us through either the Gothic literary scene or through the Internet and alt.gothic; but you may not know the other. Or this could be the first you've heard from either of us. Therefore we'd like to introduce ourselves and explain our interest in Gothic Paganism . Terry Sindar is an active part of the literary gothic subculture, and follows what he considers a gothic/pagan path. He has studied various spiritual systems including the Tarot, Cabala, Enochian magic, and psychedelic shamanism. As a writer of gothic/pagan related fantasy, he has written for a number of gothic, fantasy, and pagan magazines. He was a founding member of the band "Minstrels of Enchantment" and is co-founder of the dark illusion sideshow act "Carnival Xaotika".

Anyone practicing paganism is usually known as a pagan. The word pagan comes from the Latin word paganus which means a country dweller . As Christianity grew the term pagan took on a different definition and unsavory connotations. Gradually a pagan referred to anyone not being a Christian; and paganism came to mean a non-Christian belief or religion. The Christian Church has vigorously attempted to eradicate it by implying that pagans are unsophisticated, uneducated and worship false gods. Present day pagans or Neo-pagans, as some refer to themselves, find a unison with the ecstatic and mysticism of the pre-Christian religions which they find missing in the mainstream Western religion. Neo-paganism brings them closer to both nature and the Divine Force. The Christian God seems remote or alienated to them, and they see most Christians as viewing nature as just something to be exploited. Most pagans and Neo-pagans view paganism as a religion chiefly worshiping the Mother Goddess, God and nature. The religion also is polytheistic having many deities in the pantheon. To some these goddesses and gods are more than just deities, they represent archetypes of the collective unconsciousness. A.G.H.

For many people it exists less as an active religion than as parts of our popular culture. Halloween costumes and treats, Christmas trees and mistletoe, Easter bunnies and eggs, maypole dances, harvest festivals and hundreds of other folkways began as Pagan practices. Modern-day Pagans seek to restore the religious context of these practices. Defining Paganism The origin of the word pagan is from the Latin paganus, meaning a country dweller. When cities were Christianized the people in the country continued to practice the old religions. The word pagan took on the meaning of "those folks out there in the sticks who still do all that old-fashioned stuff." Later it came to mean any member of an indigenous folk or tribal religion or anyone who was not "of the Book" (i.e., the Koran, Bible, Torah). Pagan religions originated in a time when people lived close to the land. Pagan theologies reflect an awareness of nature with its cycles of the seasons, as well as the cycles and seasons of human life. Such awareness is a common thread among Pagans today. Few modern Pagans can fully know or follow how our ancestors worshiped. Instead we invent and reinvent our religious practices, and even our beliefs, as we determine how they resonate with our contemporary lives. Some people prefer to use the word "Neopagan" to describe this form of modern Paganism.

The idea of saving the Earth is all around them in the media. In addition to those sentiments, contemporary Pagans also teach their children to celebrate the sacredness of the Earth. Play as a Way to the Sacred Play offers many ways to engage children in the sacred. Through play, learning is fun. Pagan and other Earth-centered religious traditions honor the playfulness and joy of the human experience as sacred. Children love to make music and it can give them a sense of the Divine creator in themselves. Learning to use rhythm instruments can foster that joy. Making rattles and other musical instruments can be fun projects for the whole family. The instruments can be used in worship as well as informal play. Chants are also common in worship and they are easy to learn. Sing with children anytime. Collections of stones, leaves, or any other curiosities, can provide the start of an altar. Memories of where an item was collected and how it was identified bring a sense of the mundane-as-sacred when "just a rock" is displayed in a place of pride.

According to many archeologists and anthropologists, mankind has been practicing religions for over 25,000 years. Whether you be Wiccan, Druid, Shaman or other, you are a pagan at heart. Pagan is the worship of the old way. Paganism is a broad, eclectic contemporary religious movement that encompasses shamanistic, ecstatic, polytheistic, and magical religions. Most of the religions termed Pagan are characterized by nature-centered spirituality, honoring of pre-Christian deities/gods/goddesses, personal belief systems, lack of institutionalization, a quest to develop the self, and acceptance and encouragement of diversity. Paganism is widely practiced and includes revived or often updated ancient practices and religions. For their inspiration, Pagans look to non-Abrahamic, ecstatic, and mystery religions of old as well as indigenous and magic-using traditions from around the world. Contemporary Paganism is interwoven with artistic, visionary, and libertarian traditions and emphasizes the free will of the individual. Many traditions celebrate rituals to mark transitions in the natural world (such as solstices, lunar phases, or a birth) as well as in a person's life (such as marriage or moving to a new home). While the largest segment of the Pagan population is at times women, middle classed and white, Paganism cuts across all lines, whether racial, occupational, or class- or gender-based. Most Pagans, however, are avid readers with interests in ecology, creativity, and personal growth. Since it is not an organized movement, it is very difficult to determine the number of its practitioners, but it is estimated that there are between 100,000 and 600,000 in the U.S. alone. Some have termed Paganism the fastest-growing religion in the West.
