Selassie, whose previous name was Ras Tafari, was the black Emperor of Ethiopia. According to Rastafarian philosophy, the scriptures phrophecied him as the one with "the hair of whose head was like wool (matted hair of a black man), whose feet were like unto burning brass (black skin)". Ethiopia (Heaven or Zion) Ethiopia specifically, African in general, is considered the Rastas' heaven on earth. It is also referred to as Zion. There is no afterlife or hell as Christianity believes. The Rastas feel that their ancestors did something to offend Jah which brought them into an exile of slavery in the Western World such as the Caribbean.

Many of the best resources are out of print, hard to find, or not held in most libraries. This was a real challenge for my students in Speech 214: The Rhetoric of Reggae Music when they went to write their term papers. We decided to light a candle as opposed to just cursing the darkness, so we thought that students who were interested could post their papers in HTML in a DREAD LIBRARY so that others seeking information could benefit from the work they have already done. Here is a selection of papers from Spring, 1998 and Spring, 2000. I appreciate the extra work that these students did to get these papers web ready. They are offered as undergraduate essays. I have not checked the references nor engaged in active rewrites of these papers, because this is not intended to be a collection of refereed, publishable, scholarly articles, but a sample of what some students of reggae have been writing. However, I do suggest you study the references so that you can try and find and read these primary works on your own. We understand that everyone may not agree with what is being said here, and encourage your comments and suggestions, but it is important to remember that there is no one true perspective on most of these issues. Reggae music, rastafarianism, and related topics are not singular fields there are many reggae musics, many brands of rastafarianism, and many different perspectives expressed by those involved.

And while Marcus Garvey may not have consciously founded this religion, he raised the consciousness which led to its founding. For, in 1929 in his last address to the UNIA, in Jamaica, Marcus Garvey said, "Look to Africa where a kind would be crowned, for the day of deliverance is near." The following year on November 2, 1930 Haille Salassie was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia. In Jamaica this was seen as no ordinary event because of Marcus Garvey's prophetic vision the previous year. It didn't take too much biblical research to find passages like Revelations 5:5 which proved that Haille Salassie was God, "And one of the elders saith unto me, weep not, behold the Lion of the Tribe of Judah, the Root of David hath prevailed to open the book and loose the seven seals thereof." Rastafarianism, a religion that has had a profound influence on reggae music, described by the Jamaican educator, George Beckford as "originating in Africa, but distilled in Jamaica. It has now become synomomous with the movement and is its chief medium of communication with Blacks around the world. Bob Marley (right) is without doubt the best known pioneer of the music, but there are others like Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Toot and the Maytlas, Big Youth, Inner Circle and Third World..

Pettiford The followers of Rastafarianism believe that Haile Selassie the former Emperor of Ethiopia, is the Black Messiah who appeared in the flesh for the redemption of all Blacks exiled in the world of white oppressors. The movement views Ethiopia as the Promised Land. The group has no individual leadership. Most of the members are men from thirty-five to fifty-five years of age. The older members are either ex-Graveyites or sympathizers of his movement. Women play an important role in the Rastafarianism today, but the majority are followers of their husbands. In 1965 the membership was essentially lower class, but this is no longer the case. The Rastafarians were once considered "products of the slum," but Rastafarians now can be found among the middle class. They are found among the elite, some are students at prestigious University of the West Indies; some are in the medical and legal professions and other upper-class occupations. Their unique hairstyle known as the "dreadlocks" which many people feel is wild and unattractive is one of the reasons the Rastafarians obtained a negative image in society. Rasta, which is short for Rastafarians, adopted the dreadlocks while in the hill country in Jamaica where the movement developed its early characteristics. Another trait that is contributed to the Rastafarian’s negative image is their use of "ganja" (marijuana) in their rituals. These two particular traditions have deemed the Rastafarians as an unacceptable society by Westerners, as well as the people from within there own community.
