The US and EU will continue to the maximum extent possible to support the OECD harmonization of international test guidelines and will seek to minimize the use of laboratory animals to the greatest extent possible. The US and EU will share jointly and with the OECD information regarding screening and testing. 4. Extractions: Printer Friendly Document Despite popular opinion and negative media portrayals which disparage transgendered people as being mentally ill or making lifestyle choices, an increasing amount of evidence is surfacing which is linking the proliferation of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) to variations in gender identity and sexual orientation. In an invited paper published in the December 2001 issue of Neuroendocrinology Letters, Dr. Gunter Dorner outlines the various purported causes of transsexualism, which fall into two general classes: 1) genetic enzyme mutations and 2) so-called epigenetic effects which include stressful prenatal/postnatal situations and fetal exposure to endocrine disruptors such as the pesticide DDT and its breakdown products. ( http://www.nel.edu/22_6/NEL220601R02_Dorner.htm The authors studied the prevalence of polycystic ovaries (PCO), idiopathic oligospermia [low sperm count with no identified cause] (IO), and transsexualism (TS) in East and West Germany over the last 50 years, and correlated increases in these conditions with the use of DDT in the two countries. They found that after 1960, (when DDT usage was high) clearly increased dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate [DHEA-s] levels and ratios to cortisol were found, suggesting again the possible co-responsibility of DDT and its metabolites for the development of transsexualism. They also found that PCO commonly occurred in combination with female-to-male transsexualism, and IO typically occurred in combination with male-to-female transsexualism, suggesting multiple effects from endocrine disruption.

Environmental pollutants with endocrine activity have been linked to reduced birthrates in wildlife and loss of biodiversity. The endocrine system produces hormones which are chemical messengers directing how and when cells grow, produce bodily substances, and die. By whatever name you call them: xenoestrogens, copy cat hormones, gender benders, estrogenic compounds or environmental hormone disruptors, this new class of chemicals poses a life altering challenge. Strong evidence of defective sexual organs, behavioral abnormalities and impaired fertility exists. It must be taken seriously. In the early 50's Florida's bald eagles lost their natural instinct to mate and raise their young. In the mid 60's the reproductive failure of mink around Lake Michigan was linked to PCBs. Sexual abnormalities of alligators in Lake Apopka, Florida followed a pesticide spill. From herring gulls to turtles, to frogs, a disturbing pattern of deformity emerges. That is why the application of scientific principles and the appropriate use of scientific research are critical when evaluating real risks versus perceived risks from exposure to chemicals. The great apple scare of 1989 over the use of the pesticide Alar is a prime example of how misinterpreting scientific research can result in huge repercussions. The apple industry lost millions of dollars, Alar was banned and the apple growers filed a $200 million lawsuit against the organizations that initiated the scare. How estrogen influences organisms. When the dust finally settled, we learned that the scientific information used to support this huge scare was based on the inaccurate analyses of research on mice conducted in 1977. In addition, the analyses falsely interpreted animal results to predict human cancer risk. For the environment, the real tragedy is that Alar was banned and replaced with potentially more toxic chemicals. The Alar situation clearly demonstrates the importance of understanding and correctly interpreting scientific data when evaluating the effects of chemicals on human health and the environment.
