Concerned with the effectiveness of health policy and systems research, the Alliance recognises that health systems currently vary greatly in their performance. Council for International Organisations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) This site is a useful source of information about CIOMS, which is an international, non-governmental, non-profit organisation established jointly by the WHO and UNESCO in 1949. Extractions: The ethics of research related to healthcare in developing countries Review of the ethics of research 1.13 Effective review of the ethics of scientific and medical research is essential to ensure that unethical research is not permitted. Notwithstanding that the integrity of the researcher is of critical importance, the accepted method of ensuring that unethical research is prevented is through the establishment of a system in which research ethics committees undertake independent review of scientific protocols. In developed countries and a number of developing countries, such review is a prerequisite for research involving human participants. However, properly functioning research ethics committees are often absent or under-resourced in developing countries. In addition there may not be a pool of sufficiently trained and independent personnel to serve on a committee, and committees may not have the resources required to cover their administrative costs.

The Centre for Australian Ethical Research (CAER) undertakes research according to a number of individually tailored criteria to assist organisations and fund managers in making investment and fundraising decisions on ethical grounds. Research covers social as well as environmental criteria, with information being gathered from a variety of sources including company annual reports, government data, community groups and expert evaluation.
