And that the itchy burning of athlete's foot is, yes, caused by another fungus? And that when you take penicillin, you're taking a medicine made by a fungus? Fungi come in a variety of shapes and sizes and different types. They can range from individual cells to enormous chains of cells that can stretch for miles. Classification Fungi usually grow best in environments that are slightly acidic (a pH measurement of 5 or so; a pH of 7 is neutral). They can grow on substances with very low moisture. Fungi live in the soil and on your body, in your house and on plants and animals, in freshwater and seawater. A single teaspoon of topsoil contains about 120,000 fungi.

Extractions: Pathogenic Fungi After completion of this session the student should be able to: Describe the basic physical characteristics and reproduction of fungi. Name the fungi of medical importance. Describe the diseases associated with fungi of medical importance. Describe the basic methods used to diagnose fungal infections. Describe the mechanisms of action of the common antifungal drugs. Fungi include moulds, yeasts and higher fungi. All fungi are eukaryotic and have sterols but not peptidoglycan in their cell membrane. They are chemoheterotrophs (requiring organic nutrition) and most are aerobic. Many fungi are also saprophytes (living off dead organic matter) in soil and water and acquire their food by absorption. Characteristically they also produce sexual and asexual spores. There are over 100,000 species recognised, with 100 infectious agents of man. Moulds are composed of numerous, microscopic, branching hyphae known collectively as a mycelium. Growth occurs from the apical tip, the apical vesicles contain materials and enzymes for the formation of new hyphal wall. Older hyphae are less biochemically active and contain many storage vacuoles . In most moulds these hyphae have septa (crosswalled divisions), but in some there are none and the hyphae are

Howard, August Derleth, Henry Kuttner, Henry S. Whitehead, E.Hoffman Price, Manly Wade Wellman, and Carl Jacobi to name a few. But there are plenty of others from before the pulp era (such as Algernon Blackwood, Ambrose Bierce, Arthur Machen, M.R.James and Robert W. MYTHOLOGY For a very long time this group of organism has been misunderstood as well as misrepresented. The lack of scientific knowledge of our predecessors did not help the cause. Fungi appears only temporarily and most often after periods of rain. The strangeness of its forms, the rapidity of growth, its fleeting existence has contributed to the association of fungi to metaphysical activities and beings. The evil smell of the stinkhorn, the poison of the death cap has also in many cases rendered an evil nature to the fungi. Visit the Mythology page to learn more about the many tales behind the names given to fungi HISTORICAL REFERENCES Perhaps the sad truth about fungi is that they have found their way into the history of mankind through the manifestation of plant and animal diseases and in cases of fungi poisoning through consumption. In the past, man were not aware that the cause of these plant and animal disease was fungi, the same kingdom of organisms as the mushrooms, the toadstools. It is only later that the origin of the diseases was known. However, not all accounts are bad. Many references were also made of fungi as food. This is especially of the delicacies, truffles and morels. In the case of its use in medication, the cordyceps and lingzhi has been purported by the Chinese to have great healing powers.

Visit the online store here December 18, 2002 - The season past Well here in the South of England I had a bit of a strange season. It was very dry and basically I found nothing until September/October. When I did find something though, it was amazing! I found 1.5kg of Ceps in just a couple of hours on one day. I have never seen Ceps this prolific in the UK! Also there was more Hedgehog Fungus than usual this year, and a patch of good-sized Golden Chanterelles - oh and a ring of large Wood Blewit. Apart from that though, it has been remarkably "dead". The weather was very hot and dry in summer, and come autumn it was quite mild and still dry. We had one frost back in early October and none since, though the temperature is usually down around 10C these days. I didn't even get many new photos this year, it was that bad. However I still have lots from 2000-2001 to put up on the site when I get the time.
