Extractions: Grounded theory is a qualitative methodology which derives its name from the practice of generating theory from research which is "grounded" in data. Formally introduced by the sociologists Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss in The Discovery of Grounded Theory (1967), this methodology emerged as an alternative strategy to more traditional approaches to scientific inquiry which relied heavily on hypothesis testing, verificational techniques, and quantitative forms of analysis which were particularly popular in the social sciences at that time. Whereas many of the central components of grounded theory were outlined in The Discovery (e.g., constant comparison, theoretical sampling, coding procedures, etc.), subsequent publications by Glaser and Strauss writing alone or with others, began to reflect important differences in how these scholars envisioned grounded theory and its use. As a result, it can be argued rather convincingly (see Glaser, 1992) that two somewhat distinct methodologies have evolved based on the original work, each with its own underlying epistemology and attendant properties.

Extractions: This paper summarizes the principal findings of research that sought to provide a comprehensive understanding of the environmental scanning process. The methodology used was of major importance in obtaining data that are grounded largely in the personal experience of managers, but also in documentary evidence and in direct observation by the researcher. The purpose of the study was to investigate how managers in the Portuguese chemical industry scan their environment for information, what are the contextual factors that affect this activity, and also how managers' perceptions of environmental change affect the strategic change they implement. In the context of this research, the case study was considered appropriate for providing a holistic approach to the study of environmental scanning in industrial organizations operating in the chemical industry. In creating the case study, several types of data and information were collected, including general data about the industry and specific information about the companies that agreed to participate.

S CIENTIFIC M ETHOD I shall call this general account of scientific method "abductive explanatory inferentialism" (AEI). While this is an extended label, it does serve the useful purpose of suggesting that the theory of scientific method is centrally concerned with generating theories abductively and appraising them in terms of what philosophers have come to call inference to the best explanation. I shall explain these two related ideas later. P ROBLEM F ORMULATION According to the AEI theory of scientific method, the selection and formulation of problems are of central importance to scientific research. In fact, by adopting a particular account of scientific problems, AEI method is able to explain how inquiry is possible, and at the same time provide guidance for the conduct of research. The account of problems that boasts these twin virtues is the constraint-composition theory. As mentioned earlier, Glaser and Strauss clearly recognize the importance of understanding method in the context of problem-solving. However, although they offer some thoughtful remarks about research problems, they do not give the matter systematic attention.

Extractions: Recent studies have emphasised the importance of research into accounting phenomena in their natural setting in order to understand the social construction of accounting, suggesting the use of the naturalistic approach to research as opposed to the more structured theory driven scientific approach. However, the methods employed under the naturalistic approach are seldom explained clearly. This paper explicates the design of one method within the naturalistic approach, i.e., Grounded Theory method, to show how it can be adopted in accounting research. The rationale behind the grounded theory method is that theory should be grounded in empirical evidence, i.e., evolve from data, rather than be developed a priori and then be tested. The grounded theory method has found favour in many other disciplines, especially where (a) phenomena are expected to be studied without being manipulated to suit a predetermined research design, (b) the phenomena have diverse multi-faceted settings and (c) there is no prior theory to explain the phenomena. The paper demonstrates how Grounded Theory method can be employed to explain accounting given that accounting is a socio-technical activity involving diverse social and technical factors and is constantly evolving.

GT can use any data; it remains to be figured out what it is. In my book "The Grounded Theory Perspective" (GLASER, 2001) I wrote a chapter (11) that dealt with "all is data." I said: "'All is data' is a well known Glaser dictum. What does it mean? It means exactly what is going on in the research scene is the data, whatever the source, whether interview, observations, documents, in whatever combination. It is not only what is being told, how it is being told and the conditions of its being told, but also all the data surrounding what is being told. It means what is going on must be figured out exactly what it is is to be used for, that is conceptualization, not for accurate description. Data is always as good as far as it goes, and there is always more data to keep correcting the categories with more relevant properties." (p.145) [1] "All is Data" data, interpreted data or vague data. There is no such thing for GT as bias data or subjective or objective data or misinterpreted data. It is what the researcher is receiving, as a pattern, and as a human being (which is inescapable). It just depends on the research. [2]

It was a reaction to the dominance of quantitative research methods in which a theory is formed then an empirical study is carried out to discover whether the hypothesis is proven. Grounded theory is the opposite: a theory is systematically verified by the collection and analysis of data. Any research has three major components: collecting data, interpreting data and producing research reports. In traditional research the theory is developed as a separate component before these three are tackled, and is not reviewed until the data has been collected and interpreted. In grounded theory research the theory is grounded in the data, which is to say that it is reviewed and revised as necessary at any point in the process.
