References INTRODUCTION Cheryl Sink The Miocene age sediments include the St. Marks Formation and the Hawthorn Group. The Hawthorn Group is composed of several formations and numerous members. It is primarily a clastic unit, consisting of fine to medium grained sandy clays and silty, clayey sands, with variable amounts of carbonate (Rupert, 1988). These are usually interbedded and sometimes contain minor amounts of dolomite and phosphate. Much of the Hawthorn has limited permeability and acts as a confining unit north of the Cody scarp, called the Tallahassee Hills. The St. Marks sediments are predominately fine to medium fine grained, partially recrystallized, silty to sandy limestones that have undergone degrees of secondary dolomitization (Hendry and Sproul, 1966). Within the WKP, the St. Marks Formation comprises the top of the Upper FAS (Rupert, 1988). It also contains extensive shallow conduits in portions of the Leon Sinks cave system and Indian Springs cave. It pinches out against the Suwannee Limestone in southwestern Jefferson County and reaches a maximum thickness of approximately 60 m toward western Wakulla County.

Base level is defined for a given basin with hydraulic gradient, as the point or place where the gradient is defined as zero. The ultimate base level for all drainage basins is sea level, whereas for a chosen basin, its base level may be defined to be a higher ordered fluvial, lacustrine, or other lower elevation body of water, into which the basin drains, due primarily to the force of gravity. Ford and Williams (1989) point out, however, that base level may not be sea level, as evidenced by the documented karst springs which resurge well below sea level. If sea level is not the ultimate base for karst dissolution, and phreatic conduits are presently observed, then what is the ultimate base for active conduit formation? (Ford and Williams, 1989). Ford concludes that the active base for dissolution must be (1) the state of the system, (2) the age, and (3) the extent of clastic infilling (Ford and Williams, 1989). These arguments may be supported by the mass transport along flow lines which migrate to depth below the free piezometric surface, which are normal to the equipotential lines.

Extractions: Hydrogeology is a branch of geology, the study of rocks and the structures that are formed over vast periods of time. The way that sediments have been deposited to create different layers of rock beneath the surface, or the way that rocks have been heated and folded over millions of years to create complex structures are the subjects of geology. Hydrogeology looks at how water interacts with geological systems. But there is more to hydrogeology than wet rocks. Water is a vital natural resource for people all around the world - whether it is piped to homes or drawn out of wells. Understanding where it is and how it moves under the ground is essential in protecting this resource. By using geological maps and taking samples of underground and surface water for analysis, hydrogeologists are able build detailed pictures of how water flows through porous rocks underground. Some parts of the world are blessed with frequent rainfall and plentiful surface water resources, but most countries need to use the water that is stored underground to supplement their needs. Hydrogeologists can help by locating suitable reserves and by assessing how much water it is possible to extract without permanently damaging underground aquifers or surrounding ecosystems. By looking at the way that groundwater flows, hydrogeologists can also identify when it is at risk from pollution and how we can protect it by careful planning and land-use. Without the knowledge that hydrogeology gives us we have no way of predicting what will happen to our water resources or the future effects on the environment of water extraction.

One of the most significant aspects of this period is the expansion of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets collectively known as the "Ice Age". Evidence from the deep oceans indicate that there have been over two dozen cold (glacials) and warm (interglacial) periods during the last 2.4 million years. The most recent glaciation began about 125,000 years ago and climaxed about 21,000 years ago. At this time, over 30 percent of earth's surface was covered by ice, and sea level was at least 125 meters lower than present.
