EXTINCTION OF THE DINOSAURS (picture by NASA). At the end of the Cretaceous, 65 million years ago, not only did the dinosaurs disappear completely, but so did flying reptiles (pterosaurs), and marine reptiles (ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs). In fact, between 60 and 80% of all animal species, including many marine forms, disappeared. Most turtles, crocodiles and primitive birds also disappeared but some survived to give rise to modern forms. There have been numerous theories to account for the extinction of dinosaurs. But during the 1980's strong evidence was obtained to support the idea, originally proposed by Luis Alvarez, that a global catastrophe, caused by the impact of an asteroid, comet or meteorite, was responsible. Enormous amounts of debris would have been thrown into the atmosphere, making the Earth so cold and dark that cold-blooded animals like dinosaurs were unable to survive.     Extractions: The total number of species of land mammals occurring in the Arctic is 48 (Appendix 2 shows their distribution in the Soviet Union, North America and Greenland). The nomenclature used here follows Corbet (1978) for the Soviet Union (with minor chages as indicated) and Chapman and Feldhamer (1982) for North America and Greenland. The number of species occurring in each country is Canada 31, Alaska 29, Soviet Union 33 and Greenland 9. It can be seen that out of a world total of about 4,000 species, the variety of terrestrial mammals in the Arctic is low and consists of slightly modified shrews, hares, rodents, wolves, foxes, bears and deer. It can be seen that four groups of small mammals (shrews, hares, sciurid rodents and microtene rodents) occur regularly in Arctic tundra, although their distribution does not always correspond entirely to the distribution of that habitat. Some of the species are tundra-specific and, according to Hoffman and Taber (1968), evolved in central Eurasia during the early pleistocene and migrated to North America.

Mammals are also the group of animals to which humans belong. Belize has approximately 145 mammal species living within its boundaries. Mammals exist within all the different habitats of Belize, from the manatee and dolphins of the coastal zone, to the 5 different species of wildcat which live deep within the rainforests of the Maya Mountains. The rainforest mammals of Belize tend to be very secretive and mostly nocturnal. This makes them extremely difficult to see. They usually see, hear, smell, or feel you long before you them. Rainforest mammals do not stand out in the open for easy viewing, but instead climb through the canopy or scurry over the forest floor well ahead of you. That is one reason the Belize Zoo is such a special place. Here you can see many of the rainforest species of Belize easily. A visit to the zoo is the best way to get an introduction to the animals of Belize, and to understand why it is important to protect the habitats that sustain them. We hope this website will be the next best thing to visiting us in person.

It is widely distributed in its native Australia and has been released into New Zealand, becoming one of that countries' most important vertebrate pests. In Australia, T. vulpecula are found in five disjunct groups ( see map ): northern, eastern, central, and south western mainland Australia, as well as Tasmania. The taxonomic status of these groups is not fully resolved but there have been at least four subspecies recognised: T. v. arnhemenis (northern populations), T. v. johnstonii (north-eastern populations), T. v. fuliginosus (Tasmanian), and T. v. vulpecula (eastern, central and south-western populations). The present arrangements for protecting animals from abuse are complex and incomplete. They reflect nearly a century of sporadic legislation, especially the Protection of Animals Act 1911, which absorbed earlier legislation dating as far back as the 18th century and which has itself since been amended nine times. That was concerned primarily with captive and domestic animals where humans have responsibility, not with wild animals, and hunting and coursing were exempt. Cruelty was defined as "unnecessary suffering". Since then, Parliament has passed, as examples, the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, which I noted created some problems for my former colleagues at MAFF, and particularly the Wild Mammals Act 1996, to which my Bill today is an amendment. The 1996 Act also began as a Private Member's Bill under John McFall. It had two objectives: to prevent cruelty to non-captive wild animals; and to ban hunting. That second part fell so it remained as an anti-cruelty Act.
