E verything in the world has mass, and since everything is made up of atoms of electrons, protons and neutrons, the mass of everything is due to the mass of these subatomic particles. A proton weighs about 2000 times the weight of an electron. A neutron is slightly heavier than a proton. During the last part of the 20th century, physicists have constructed a theory of subatomic particles and their interactions known as the Standard Model of particle physics. Three forces operate in this microscopic world: electromagnetism, which encompasses the electric and magnetic forces; the strong nuclear force, which holds the protons and neutrons together in the nucleus, or heavy central core of an atom; and the weak subnuclear force, which causes some nuclei to decay in radioactive processes and helps to generate energy at the center of the Sun. Extractions: A. INTRODUCTION High-energy physics is the search for elementary particles and basic laws of nature. What are the smallest building blocks out of which protons, neutrons, atoms, and all matter are made? Do such elementary particles exist?; and if so, what are they? This search to unveil the elementary constituents of matter, along with the forces that link them, involves distances thousands of times smaller than nuclear sizes, about one ten trillionth of a centimeter, or 10-13cm. Accelerators must have very large energies to probe nature at such small distances. The ultimate goal of this quest is a view of the underlying first principles that govern our entire physical universe. In recent years, we have realized a strong and growing synergism between the physics of short distances and the properties and large- scale structure of the universe. This development reflects the unity of science as explored on both the high-energy and particle astrophysics frontiers. With this connection, we are now addressing some of the most basic questions one can ask: How did our physical universe begin? How did it evolve to its present state? What will be its final fate? Over the past several decades, experimental discoveries and theoretical insights have significantly advanced our understanding of the elementary particles and their forces. We now know that electrons, protons, and neutrons make up the visible matter all around us, but only the electron appears to be a point-like elementary particle. Protons and neutrons are bound states of more basic constituents, the up and down quarks. Those quarks are permanently bound or confined by what are called strong interactions or forces.

Extractions: The PPT Group aims to increase our understanding of the Standard Model, to confront it with experiment and to seek physics beyond it. The main focus is on perturbative and non-perturbative calculations in QCD. Current areas of activity include analytical and numerical studies of lattice QCD - spectrum, matrix element, form factor and structure function calculations for light and heavy quark systems using improved actions - and recent developments in collider physics - unpolarised and polarised structure functions, small x resummation, heavy quark and Higgs production, SUSY phenomenology, and other ideas for physics beyond the Standard Model. There is a growing interest, in common with the PPE Group, in B physics and CP violation. Other interests of the Group include inflationary models of the early Universe, the phase structure and dynamics of electro-weak models, chiral fermions, improved lattice algorithms, and other non-perturbative techniques such as the exact renormalisation group.
