I intend to try to convey the vision that the Toronto Healthy House project embodies as it applies to wastewater treatment. Please excuse me if I am a little too general. The Toronto Healthy House project came about as a result of a nation-wide competition initiated by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the Healthy Housing Design Competition. The goal of the competition was, in broad terms, to design healthy and environmentally sensitive dwellings suitable for the next century. With respect to wastewater, the guidelines emphasized reducing or eliminating water consumption and therefor waste water production, minimizing the use of chlorine or other additives and using passive and low energy methods wherever possible.

Liquid waste treatment plant and system operators , also known as wastewater treatment plant and system operators, remove harmful pollutants from domestic and industrial liquid waste so that it is safe to return to the environment. Water is pumped from wells, rivers, and streams to water treatment plants, where it is treated and distributed to customers. Liquid waste travels through customers' sewer pipes to liquid waste treatment plants, where it is treated and returned to streams, rivers, and oceans, or reused for irrigation and landscaping. Operators in both types of plants control processes and equipment to remove or destroy harmful materials, chemical compounds, and microorganisms from the water. They also control pumps, valves, and other processing equipment to move the water or liquid waste through the various treatment processes, and dispose of the removed waste materials.

    Extractions: The City of North Liberty was incorporated November 10, 1913. The population was approximately 190 and out houses were the primary means of sewage disposal. The population dipped to 150 in 1930 and doubled to 300 by 1940. Septic systems were installed mid-century. These systems broke down sewage with naturally occurring bacteria. In 1960 the population was 334, and the city initiated a study to determine the feasibility of city-wide sewage treatment. In 1965 a letter written to the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare stated, "Existing septic tanks and soil absorption systems are grossly inadequate because of clay and gumbo soil conditions. Sewage is discharged into street ditches creating a local nuisance and health hazard. Final disposal is into Muddy Creek which discharges into the Iowa River less than a mile upstream from the Iowa City city limits."

If too much untreated sewage or other organic matter is added to a lake or stream, dissolved oxygen levels will drop too low to support sensitive species of fish and other aquatic life. Wastewater treatment systems are designed to digest much of the organic matter before the wastewater is released so that this will not occur. Treatment systems use physical, chemical, and biological processes: Primary treatment physically removes large solids using grates, screens, and settling tanks. Secondary treatment promotes growth of bacteria and other microbes that break down the organic wastes. These biodegradation processes also take place in streams, lakes, and oceans, but the purification systems in nature can easily be overloaded with input of too much organic waste. Secondary treatment prevents this type of pollution by degrading most of the organic matter before the water is released into the environment. Tertiary treatment is used only where it is needed to protect the receiving waters from excess nutrients. In tertiary treatment, the concentrations of phosphorus or nitrogen are reduced through biological or chemical processes.
