In sixteenth century Europe when the continental reformers Luther, Calvin, and Zwingli could agree on little else, they agreed to use the power of the state to persecute and kill our Anabaptist forebears. In the seventeenth century English Baptists were persecuted by Kings James I and Charles I. In colonial America established churches in several of the colonies persecuted Baptists who had come to the New World in search of religious liberty. Baptist leaders Isaac Backus, John Leland, and others struggled to guarantee religious liberty for all Americans and helped lay the foundation for the adoption of the religious liberty clauses of the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." While the experience of persecution steeled our resolve to fight for religious liberty, the source of this resolve is rooted in our sense of scripture. Mainstream Baptists have contended that the consistent witness of scripture is that God's invitation is freely given and freely accepted. The ministry of Jesus incarnates this sense of invitation: The disciples of John reported all these things to him. So John summoned two of his disciples and sent them to the Lord to ask, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" When the men had come to him, they said, "John the Baptist has sent us to you to ask, 'Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?'" Jesus had just then cured many people of diseases, plagues, and evil spirits, and had given sight to many who were blind. And he answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have good news brought to them. And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me."
